Woodsmoke for cover scent?

For the last several years I have been smoking my clothing body and gear. It has been a very effective cover scent for me. Since I have started doing it I have had the occasion to see "celeb" hunters doing it. Last season on "Roadtrips" I saw Ginger and Jesse Moorehead doing it. I remember reading a piece that Larry Jones wrote stating that he felt it was effective cover scent.

I have had deer directly down wind of me on numerous occasions and to tell the truth, I have not had a deer wind me in four years!

What I am wondering is do any of you do it also? I think I may have stumbled onto the greatest secret the "scent industry" doesnt want us to know. Any thoughts?

Re: Woodsmoke for cover scent?

Welcome to the forums!

Theres no reason why it would not work...but like anything else that may be abnormal to a deer in a particular area it has the chance of spooking them.

Where I hunt most of the time there are alot of spruce trees. When I setup a treestand I ussually have to trim a few branches. I'll take them home and store my clothes with them in plastic tubs.

BTW...I wash my clothes in PineSol and have had deer under my treestand that never knew I was there.

I wash my clothes in PineSol and dry them outside then store them in plastic tubs with the trimmed branches from the area I'm hunting.

Welcome to the forums!

I read an article (in Field and Stream, if I remember) a few years ago about a guy that teaches others how to be better hunters. According to the article he got you close enough to pull hair out of the deer. He used smoke as a cover too. It was a good article.

Every year at deer camp in intentionally stand down wind of the fire. I guarantee it works. It would be hard to get up and build a fire before daylight just for the smoke benefit but yes, IMHO, it works.

Re: Woodsmoke for cover scent?

Thanks for the welcome aboard guys. I have a handful of friends I have told about it. It is kinda hard to keep the secret from the guys you hunt with, smelling like a campfire and all.)

One friend refused to do it. I have been preaching it to him for years and finally last season, he had been busted enough and decided to give it a chance. He left all the high dollar clothing at home, brought over some old BDU's and smoked em up. That was on Tues. Nov. 8, He killed his first P&Y buck on Nov. 11. It came in from down-wind, caught him by surprise because he had never had a deer approach that stand from that direction.

I have done that for years. People laugh, but where I hunt in southern utah there are several big fires every year. In my experience, the deer are not bothered by the smell unless they actually see fire or plumes of smoke.

I used woodsmoke cover this day and this buck walked right to me from downwind within 60 yds and I was in a bare clearing standing upright. Then I "smoked" him while he was trying to figure out what I was.

Re: Woodsmoke for cover scent?

I read in several trad archery hunting mags that it was a tactic used by indians. Woodsmoke and wood ash for camo face "paint".

Up in the northern sections of Vermont, when everyone seems to be burning wood to heat, you can smell it in the air all the time during the fall and hunting months.

I would think it would be a fantastic technique in areas of the country that have fireplaces, woodstoves, etc.. burning during the cooler weather.

Re: Woodsmoke for cover scent?

Haven't tried it as a cover, but can vouch for a deer's apparent lack of alarm to the smoke smell (or maybe curiosity).

I did a 12-15 acre controlled burn last Jan-Feb. in some planted pines. Twice, while doing perimeter patrols on the four-wheeler, I ran deer out of the burn! shocked.gif Smoke was thick and fire still burning but they walked right into into it. Beats me!

Re: Woodsmoke for cover scent?

I dont know about the liquid smoke. We have kicked that around a little, but after one of the brighter people involved in this little deal explained why it worked, we did not think it applicable. Smoke permeates everything, giving a much better coverage than would a spray.

Re: Woodsmoke for cover scent?

For those of you that arent quite sure if smoke really kills/covers human odor, here is a little test to try at home:

Polypropylene is great at wicking moisture away from the skin. However, after a garment has been worn for some time and has wicked some persperation, it takes on an odor that seemingly cannot be washed from the garment. Since I know no one here owns a nasty, stinky garment like that, borrow one from your brother-in-law and smoke it. Hang it in lingering smoke for an hour or so. It will no longer smell foul when warmed by the body. This is a simple test, and if you are not sure about the effectiveness of smoke, it will make a beliver out of you and your brother-in-law will be more pleasant to hunt with.)

Welcome!

Not unless I want to hunt the nearby forest fire! grin.gif Just goofing! The thing that gets me though is they tell you not to smoke while on stand, but its ok to smoke your clothing? Yeah I know! But regular cigs not menthol would have a different smell. I can say I have had deer walk right by me when I had a cig burning! But, I just dont understand why not to smoke, but its ok to smoke your clothing?

Yeah, you hear things, many are myth. While I personally dont and never have smoked and never will, I really honestly think that cigarette smoke does not bother deer too much and have wondered if it might possibly even actually help to in a way mask your own scent by kind of confusing the deer sense of smell somewhat. Know several people who smoke and have good luck, but I would strongly suggest not taking up smoking as a method for covering your cover scent.

My wifes stepfather is a chain smoker, and he always had great luck with mature deer coming in very close, even while he had a cigarette lit on several occasions.

I believe smoke doesn't bother them at all - I don't smoke cigs but have had several guys hunting with us that had to put their cig down right before they put an arrow through a nice buck (No lie!)

Smoking up does so much more than just give you a cover scent - Kills bacteria - bacteria = scent That is the main reason we use it and it really seems to work.

Welcome to the forums porkchop.

I've always been a firm believer that the smell of smoke doesn't bother game too much.

Hears a thought. I wonder if liquid smoke would work ??? confused.gifsmile.gif

I was thinking the same about the liquid smoke before I got to your post.

My sister smokes while hunting and has had to put her cigarette down to shoot just about every deer she has ever shot. She usually only smokes one or two per hunt. A HUGE deer came in to within less than 30 yards of her stand last year while she was smoking. Sadly her scope was messed up and she missed.
