Jeramie
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? Why? Whats the Cutting Dia and overall length? Unless theyre to short I couldnt see why they would be...
Gator
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? Both the 85gr Thunderhead and Montec are both illegal, they do not meet the 1.5" length requirement Also, Muzzy MX-4, G5 Striker, Slick Trick, Tight Point T locks, Wac'Em just to name a few!! Gator
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? Vt, I think it boils down to the 3:1 ratio theory from yesteryear. I had been trying to get with the ODWC to try and change that, BUT have run into some stiff opposition from the Department, and from the state bow council
hutchies
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? [ QUOTE ] Y'all have a length requirement? I can understand the diameter, but why length? [/ QUOTE ] Exactly, Gator was working to get it changed but nobody high enough up cares..............and neither do most broadhead makers. 257bob
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? Just curious. Do you know of anybody ever being ticketed or questioned about this? I was always under the impression that it was measured from tip to back end (what is screwed into the insert). I know several guys that shoot 85 grain heads in OK, including slick tricks, montecs, sonics, and Nitrons. I have never heard of this being an issue. I will be travelling back home to OK this fall and had planned on shooting one of these "illegal" heads. I am going to have to do some more research. Gator
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? I ahve yet to hear of anyone being ticketed, BUT really don't want to take that chance. The measurement is from tip to shoulder, where it would butt up to the insert. I had to call 2 GW to get that verified. 257bob, if you have any questions, ask me, I may have an answer for you. I will say this, I contacted many manufacturers about this, and the only one to really help was MAGNUS, and they don't even have a head that is an issue!!!! I won't tell ya'll what NAP had to say, but I will NEVER EVER use ANY of their products, EVER!! Muzzy wasn't much help either, never heard from WAC'EM, SLICK TRICK, or Tight point........ 257bob
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? It's funny, I found this on the OKlahoma wildlife department website. [ QUOTE ] Are Mechanical Broadheads Legal in Oklahoma? BROADHEADS: There have been some questions concerning the use of mechanical or "open upon impact" broadheads. They are legal to use in Oklahoma as long as they are at least 7/8 inches wide when they open on impact. [/ QUOTE ] In this explanation it doesn't say anything about length being a concern. I know what the printed regulations say, but they should probably be consistent, don't ya think.
Gator
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? I agree bob, that is the other thing I have a problem with, the wording. I have kind of laid off doing anything more this year, for fear of bringing this to light, and making the ODWC have their GW's out checking length. Hopefully I can get some more support over winter, and rear my ugly head come spring!!
ousoonerfan22
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? What do the regulations require on length? What do the TH 85 gr measure in length? I just reread the post 1.5" is required. Why?
Gator
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? To answer your question on "why", I beleive it to be on the OLD standard theory of a ratio of 3:1, meaning for every 3" length, it has 1" of heighth, I THINK. What this does is create a lesser of an angle, leading to better penetration, this is from a traditional standpoint. With todays faster bows, that 3:1 is OLD SCHOOL thinking. Look at the angle of the blades on say a MAGNUS, Wensel, or Steelforce, these are closer to that 3:1 rule. Now look at the Striker, MX-4, Wac'em, they are shorter, creating a steeper blade angle. Alot of the mechanicals out there have a steep blade angle, and people are getting EXCELLENT penetration from the majority. I know that G5's Striker has already gotten a complete pass through on a 320lb black bear, from a 50lb draw bow. So that there throws the theory of steeper blade angle causing less penetration out the window. Everybody else also has had good penetration rsults out of their small heads, at least according to their web sights. But like anything else, for every good testimonial, I am sure there is one to negate it.

Gator
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? No other state has a law concerning broadhead length, only Oklahoma. At least what I got from G5 states this.

Gator
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? I would wait till after this season. reason i say this, is because NOTHING will happen this year. Plus if there are people out there using an illegal head, they may not know it, and I don't want to bring any attention on this till later on. BUT for this to go forth, WE need to band together, and get our voices heard. 1 person doing this will get it NOWHERE
ousoonerfan22
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? Sounds good, after this season we need to attend the wildlife department meetings and voice our opinion.
VtBowhunter
Re: 85 gr thunderhead illegal in Oklahoma? Gator, good luck to ya......I don't know if I can be of any help but you'll have my support. This rule is an odd one for sure. Some states don't allow Crimson Talon style heads either due to the fact that the blades aren't "In Line" with the ferrel..........another dopey law.
