Mach1
Re: albino buck Cool pics. Albinos are illegal to shoot here in IL, but piebalds are legal game.
hunterfisherman
Re: albino buck I'm not sure if I would shoot one or not. What a cool thing to see in the woods. I would probably wait till I had to make that decision and then decide
spyderpancake
Re: albino buck A lot of albino bucks have that dark patch between the ears. Like you said, might be from rubbing, and it could also be from the scent glands located there.

Doc
Re: albino buck As I understand it, most of the white deer that you see in the wild are not really albinos (pink eyes and clearish hooves, etc.).I have read that all deer carry the white coloration gene but it is generally recessive and doesn't take over without excessive inbreeding. Piebalds are the same situation. True albinism and melanism (black) are very rare occurances. NY has a herd of white deer located at what used to be a huge fenced in army munitions depot. They are not albinos. The enclosure had caused inbreeding which allowed the recessive gene to take over in a large percentage of the herd. They are some very odd looking deer. I have only seen one picture of a pure black deer, and I can't remember where that occurred. As far as this condition representing some form of inferiority, I have heard that also but I can't remember where I heard it or if it was a very credible source. Frankly, I have seen some piebald mounts that sported some pretty impressive antlers. In fact my son shot one a few years ago that had a very nice rack indeed. Do they have other characteristics that could be considered inferior? I haven't a clue. It seems odd that some states would protect white deer if there was some scientifically known inferiority in them. Doc
