Re: albino buck

i was watching what i thought to be an albino doe but last evening i videoed her in a field and when i watched it on my tv she's a piebald...but she's mostly white.....and is leagel in my state but not where she lives....lot's of posted ground there...and as for piebalds are caused from interbreeding that to is possible where she lives cause a person can see 50-60 deer there every evening...

Re: albino buck

As I understand it, most of the white deer that you see in the wild are not really albinos (pink eyes and clearish hooves, etc.).I have read that all deer carry the white coloration gene but it is generally recessive and doesn't take over without excessive inbreeding. Piebalds are the same situation. True albinism and melanism (black) are very rare occurances. NY has a herd of white deer located at what used to be a huge fenced in army munitions depot. They are not albinos. The enclosure had caused inbreeding which allowed the recessive gene to take over in a large percentage of the herd. They are some very odd looking deer. I have only seen one picture of a pure black deer, and I can't remember where that occurred. As far as this condition representing some form of inferiority, I have heard that also but I can't remember where I heard it or if it was a very credible source. Frankly, I have seen some piebald mounts that sported some pretty impressive antlers. In fact my son shot one a few years ago that had a very nice rack indeed. Do they have other characteristics that could be considered inferior? I haven't a clue. It seems odd that some states would protect white deer if there was some scientifically known inferiority in them.
