Thanksgiving "accident"

What a tragic story.

She loses husband, son on Thanksgiving

Husband shoots son in hunting accident, dies at his side from heart attack.

MELROSE -- Marie McKenna lost her heart on Thanksgiving Day.

Everything important died that day and giving thanks hasn't been thought about since.

"You should never have to lose what you love so much," she said, sitting in a car in her driveway because being in the house is just too much. "It's still just rolling around and around in my mind."

Her son, Ronald McKenna II, 33, died Thursday after his father mistook him for a deer in the woods behind their Clay County house, authorities said. Her husband, Ronald McKenna, 54, died next to his son after suffering a heart attack.

An accident. Two accidents.

Two accidents that weren't supposed to happen.

"You were not supposed to leave me," Marie said, with tears in her eyes, to the gray-headed man in the picture she was showing off. "You were supposed to wait for me."

There were too many projects left undone -- the wood-burning fireplace he promised her in the living room of the home he built for her decades ago. There were too many fishing trips father and son hadn't yet gone on -- the pair would traipse off together in search of the biggest fish, or the biggest story, whichever came first.

There were too many years that were yet to be lived, that now, must be lived alone.

"When you've been together for so long, you're not two any more, you're one," she said. "My heart hurts so bad."

Authorities told Marie her husband had massive heart blockage that went undetected by his regular doctors for years.

"His heart couldn't take it," Marie said.

Authorities also told the family the elder McKenna tried to save his son, but when efforts proved futile, took the shirt off his own back, spread it across his son's face, then laid down to die.

Re: Thanksgiving \"accident\"

I can't imagine something that terrible. I think if that happened to me though, I would want the same thing. If it was my fault...I would want to stay right with him, at his side through the gates of Heaven. I only hope and pray my children grow to be old. God bless this family, they will be in our prayers... frown.gif
