Guest Andrea
I've been "summoned" again. Everytime I get one of these in the mail....I call the day before ( like it says) and I am told that I don't have to show up. Sure, most people think jury duty stinks, but I kinda wanna be on one!! A good case too. Like a murder trial or something like that. I would be a good juror for the prosecutor. Oh well. Monday is the day... so we'll see. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Jury duty I hate it. The last time I got summoned it was for a really nasty custody battle after a divorce. Glad I didn't get picked for that one.
hutchies
Re: Jury duty Yeah and if your lucky you will get paid like Oklahoma. I think it is $5 a day unless it went up since I had to go.

Bownarow
Re: Jury duty My wife had to call in last week for federal jury duty and they told her she didn't have to show up. She has to call in again this week though.

Guest Andrea
Re: Jury duty I do believe the rate of pay here is $15 a day. That won't even pay for the gas to drive to the courthouse.

Tominator
Re: Jury duty I've been summoned twice. First time was for a county where I didn't live anymore, so I got out of that one. Second one was in the spring, so I petitioned the judge to delay it until the summer, he agreed, but I wasn't needed so I've never actually served. My dad sat on a murder trial where they convicted a lady who shot her abusive husband, sent her away for life. About 5 years later the outgoing governor commuted her sentence and set her free. My dad was, ummmmm, angry shall we say?

The governor (Celeste I think) commuted about 5 sentences that involved domestic abuse I think.

vagobbln
Re: Jury duty My first experience was a couple years ago. Had no idea about the case going in only to find out it was a double capital murder. My lucky day. A lady in the county hired two thugs to kill her husband and stepson. She got the death penalty and one of the thugs ratted the other one out to get life without parole. This was the trial for the other shooter. The trial wasn't to determine his guilt, but to determine whether he got the death penalty or not. (I didn't know this at the time) The pool was huge and I got pulled the first cut. It was a nerve-wracking day, starting at 8:00 in the morning. I finally got cut a 6:00 that afternoon. Whew! What happened was that a lady in the jury room, who knew about the other sentences was talking about it to the other jurors and I overheard. The judge found out about it and jerked us back out in the courtroom one by one. Sitting about 15 feet in front of a confessed murderer I was asked by the DA if I could put aside what I had heard in the jury room. I, in so many words, said "nope, fry one, fry'em all". I was excused. I don't drink much, but I remember the beer I had when I got home tasted pretty darn good.
Hoosierbuck
Re: Jury duty Jury duty sucks, but it is one of the bedrocks of our society. I have talked to lots of jurors after trials, and while not all said they liked it, almost all said it was a very interesting experience that everyone should go through once. If you get called, just answer the questions truthfully, and then follow the law, AND ABOVE ALL USE YOUR COMMON SENSE! If something is malarkey, you can treat it as such and disregard it. Everyone harps about the defendant getting a fair trial, which is so true, but the State deserves a fair trial, also, and if the State loses, they can't appeal or refile a different charge, it's game over. Go forth, and do good. Whew! Gota little worked up, there, sorry. I have another trial coming up in October, so I am getting a little primed already. slugshooter
Re: Jury duty I had jury duty about 3 weeks ago. I had a low number so I had to go in. I sat there all day in a jury room with nothing but magazines and never saw the inside of the court room. Hardest 12 bucks I ever made. slugshooter
Re: Jury duty I remember a girl in high school telling us how her dad got out of jury duty. Her dad owned a large extermination company in the city and when they asked him his occupation he told them "Hired assassin."
wtnhunt
Re: Jury duty I have had to go once, never got selected for a trial though.
