Hillbilly
Are there any big names out there. I have recently been turned to Wild Rose Kennels, but was wondering about any others. Also can a dog with no bloodline or history of hunting in the family, can they become a great water dog and can that dog start it's own blood line. elkhntnfool
Re: Lab Breeders? Alright, I'm not even sure where to start. First off you don't have to get a pup from some big name breeder to get a good dog. The best bloodlines in the world won't make a dog hunt. It's all in how the pup is brought up. You could get a pup a hunting background from the classifieds of your local paper. Although I would caution that no matter where you choose to get a pup from that it's parents have both have good health clearences and that proof can be provided. You don't want to invest in a dog only to have to put it down at an early age due to some heratitary disease. As long as you choose a pup with a could temperment and work with it on a regular basis you should end up with a wonderful hunting companion. Don't get me wrong it is good to start out with a dog that has hunting in it genies so to speak but it is not entirly neccasarry. One question for you is are you totally stuck on getting a Lab. There are many capable breeds out there? If you need anymore help just ask.
dogdoc
Re: Lab Breeders? Casey--if you were closer to Oklahoma I could hook you up with a great pup. If you want to pay for shipping I can still get you in touch of a couple breeders with some great hunting pups. Sure you can purchase a pup from non-hunting parents but I wouldn't advise it. I would strongly recommend getting a pup from proven parents--either hunters or hunt test parents. I'd also purchase a pup where both parents have health clearances. This would include hips and eyes. It could also include CNM and elbows. There are several breeds that are used for retrieving but I wouldn't own anything but a lab. A lab from good hunting line will cost anywhere from 400 to 800 dollars--more if the parents are Master Hunters or Field Champions. I purchased my blk lab from a friend--both parents were hunters. My young girl went 4 for 4 on her AKC junior title. Has one senior pass and is only one pass away from her seasoned HRC title--she is 1 1/2 years old. After I get her seasoned title and SR title I plan on breeding her if all her health clearances check out ok. good luck and let me know if you have any questions. you might check out The Refuge forums--they have a nice Gun Dog Classified room with lots of pups for sale. http://www.refugeforums.com/refuge/index.php? todd

double_drop
Re: Lab Breeders? you don't need to buy a high dollar dog just for a hunting dog. the dog is only as good as the person who trains him. i got my lab for free and he is registered and he also points birds. can't complain at all. i trained him by myself WITHOUT any shock collar involved. rifleman25
Re: Lab Breeders? Mark and Tracy Christianson of Stanton Nebraska own TLC Labs. Great dogs. Beck Retriever Kennels of Sioux Falls South Dakota, jim or jerry beck. Great dogs. Kellogs Kennels of Madison South Dakota has great pointing labs. Black Water kennels of Missouri have excellent dogs as well. My dad has trained dogs for years and done trials and hunt tests for about 25 years. These are where our males go to breed. Many, many champs and good hunter out of these outfits.
