horst
Been watching a big 8 pointer.24/25 inch spread, tines over a foot long.Dropped dad off at his stand tonight, drove around the corner and there stood that buck, in the field I got permission for.I watched him a minute, and could tell where he was heading.I decided to try to head him off.I went down the fenceline to get ahead of him, got to the end of the draw he was in and looked around, hes nowhere in sight.A little confused now I get up to my knees look around and dont see him.Im sitting there like an idiot and look over my shoulder, hes feeding behind me in the nieghbors field.I duck back down, clip the release on, rise up and start to draw back, hes not even aware Im there.I put the pin right behind his shoulder, look through my peepsight for a long time, and let down.I talked to the guy that owns that field, hes after the same buck and starts hunting this weekend with shotgun. He told me I can hunt all his property, but not till after shotgun season. First tme Ive had him in range in 3 weeks and he beats me donw the fenceline by 30 yrds, that was kinda tough to swallow but I figured if the guys gonna let me in later Id have to take my chances with the deer living through slug season.Hard to believe how an invisible property line an screw up a perfectly good stalk

horst
Re: Well, so much for that. After shotgun season Ive pretty much got free range over the better part of something close to 5 square miles out there.Theres a few fields among them I still cant hunt but ill have the majority of the ground in those 3 sections to myself. These are three of the best sections for big bucks Ive ever hunted in.I spent all season finding landowners and gathering permission for these properties. The guy whos shotgun hunting was the last one I wanted to talk to and owns the bggest share of the ground.Id like to hunt these places again after this year and cant see throwing it away over a set of antlers. If this buck gets killed shotgun hunting theres others in there just as big, and some bigger.Ive been targeting this one because hes been the most visible and I couldnt get in to try any of the others till the late season. If I dont screw this up Im not gonna have to worry about where to hunt the late season again. These guys are all nieghbors and if I get one mad theres a real good chance of losing all my acess.Plus the number of slough holes and amount of switchgrass out there most of these bucks surviving is a pretty good bet.The guy that is gonna let me in said he should just let me bowhunt it, by shotgun season the bucks all dissapear anyway. His wife was there though and talked him into making me wait till after the gun season Another thing i got going is Ive been watchingthese deer for months, these guys just hunt them the one weekend, I know where they hide and their travel routes, they just put on drives and walk past a lot of the deer. Not saying theres anything wrong with the way they hunt, they just dont put the time into it I do and Im hoping thats gonna pay off in the end

DSGB
Re: Well, so much for that. That would have been very hard not to shoot. Hopefully you'll be rewarded for your honesty, and that buck's daddy comes in bow range on your property.
Tominator
Re: Well, so much for that. i've been in situations like that. i held off too. like you say, no deer is worth losing permission or ticking off a land owner--at least IMHO i think you did the right thing Chris
Guest KSNimrod
Re: Well, so much for that. It'll be all the sweeter when you can call that guy with nothing to hide and have him help you drag a monster off his property! You did the right thing. horst
Re: Well, so much for that. [ QUOTE ] I would have shot him!!!! Just trail him back to your land!!!! [/ QUOTE ] Rossman, actually that woulda been very easy to do, the snows melting, the grounds muddy and his track were quite plain after I noticed them. But it was just the weekend before that I told the guy Id stay out till he was done.He lives right across the road and would surely have noticed me out in his field.Hes a nice guy, he lets me hunt, and while I probably coulda convinced him the deer had jumped the fence after I shot it, I wouldnt have felt right about it.Not to mention he might not have believed me and Id of lost my acess to his ground.the way it stands now I dont feel to bad, {though I have questioned my sanity}I still got the ground to hunt, and everyones still happy,{except me when I think about it real hard} LOL. Guest deldeer
Re: Well, so much for that. you did the right thing, i sat in my stand during early muzz. this year & did'nt see a thing till it was time to leave. (got to dark in the woods), walk out to the edge of the field, there are two groups of 10 deer standing there looking at me & my son. the owner of the field gave me permission to walk down the edge as long as i did'nt shoot into his field.... bad feeling!!! Shaun_300
Re: Well, so much for that. yes Chris, a lot of people would have opened fire on that buck... but you definetly did the right thing. The last thing you want to do is tick that landowner off then that would have been your last buck off his property lol. like Rhino said, i am sure you will be rewarded for doing the right and ethical thing. Thumbs up.
