Re: keeping the velvet on horns?

I was just a my taxidermist house today, we were just talking and what not and I asked him what I should do if I shoot a velvet buck that I want mounted and he said to hand the rack upside down and poke holes on all the antler tip because then the blood will run out and then he said to get it to a taxidermist asap so they can preserve it or freeze dry it.

Re: keeping the velvet on horns?

my first mule I did it myself, went a bought a jar of fermeldihyde[spelling] at a drugstore, then went and got a huge needle from a vet clinic and injected the velvet so it was all soaked underneath,if you do it do it outside in well ventilated area,I used about 1/2 liter to do a 170" mule deer, alot was waisted but cost me 5 bucks compared to a hundred or so at the taxedermist and it has preserved for the last 6 years or so perfect!
