Why homemade game cams?

Re: Why homemade game cams?

Spent under $150 to build my first one and I was curoius as to how easy it would be to build one, not to mention I kind of like fiddling around with technology and electronics type stuff. Was really not that difficult, and am hoping to get better performance than the commercial cams that are out on the market that would be priced considerably higher than what I spent.

Probably going to find another camera and get into building another one pretty soon.

Re: Why homemade game cams?

Here is a couple more good sites and homebrew forums to check out.

Hags House

Real Deal Hunting Chat

Lots of good info

The biggest purchase would be the camera. Depending on which one you use you could spend $30 to $110 on just the camera. $50-$60 on the board, and $15-$20 on the case.

Pixcontroller has a step by step tutorial on their website. Here's a couple pics of some i have made just to show you what they look like. The performance, and quality of pics are much better than commercial units.

Is this difficult?

[/ QUOTE ]

No.

[ QUOTE ]

Why do you do it?

[/ QUOTE ]

Better quality. I had 2 Gamespy 100's, they would not trigger. My homebrews never miss a trigger and have very very few false triggers.

Is it cheaper than buying one?

Depends on what you want.

Re: Why homemade game cams?

No problem WTNhunt!

Huntin girl, I started building my own cams because I was amazed at what a ripoff commercial cams were. I didn't understand why people just accepted the fact that it may take 5+ seconds to trigger the picture or that you could fill up a whole card of pictures of trees blowing in the wind or that the batteries might not last a whole week. The list goes on. You can't match a homebrew unless you pay the big bucks for a Camtrakker, or Pennswoods cam. Which are actually homebrews. Leaf river and Cuddeback come close but they cost more than a homebrew and they still have their problems. Leaf River has a slower trigger. Cuddeback has major user friendliness issues and doesn't have a viewing screen to view and delete pictures. Also, picture quality isn't very consistent with the cuddeback especially in in closeups. But like I said, The leaf river and Cuddeback cost more than a homebrew. I sold my cuddeback and built 2 homebrews. I would've been happy if I just got one homebrew for one cuddeback, but I had enough money leftover to make 2!

Building your own isn't very difficult. There are sites with so much information and forums to hold your hand on the way, if you run into any problems, you'll be able to find an answer right away.

Re: Why homemade game cams?

I have had several comercial units. Then I got upset with defferent aspects of it. I found Jesses and Hags house and started reading about making your own. I have sold my commercial cams and made 4 homebrews so far and I am currently working on two more. You cant compair a moultrie with any of these. If today you went into a store and found a leaf river for under 250 dollars, top of the line, Would you buy it? Well you can build your own for less than that and it will equal or be better than the comercial top of the line camera. It looks like there is more to it but it is not that hard. If i can do it anyone can. You have plenty of help going to one of the websites shown above. I spend alot of time at hags house but they all will help you out. You will get alot more for your bucks by making your own. But you know if I had the money and it didnt matter I would still make my own.

You just feel some much better knowing you made this. Like nike says Just do it. I have some pics of mine on my webshots page below. grin.gif

Nice looking cams. Looks like you are using pixcontrollers. My first was a pix with a canon sure shot owl pf. You should check out the new boards at hags house, they are only 1.75 inches by 1.75 inches (BG2). they have all the bells and whistles also. It is amazing how small all of them are getting.
