elnor
I have purchased a safe ( see related thread here ) and am getting ready to install it. The manual recommends elevating the safe on 2-by-4 wood supports if it's to be installed on a bare concrete floor. Why is this recommended? The manual also recommends anchoring the safe by drilling and lagging at each of the bottom four corners plus the two top back corners. The safe came with only two lag holes in it, however, at the bottom front center and bottom back center. Should I drill the additional four bottom and two back holes? It seems like that would weaken the fire safety quite a bit even if I do seal it with high temperature silicone caulking as recommended. I'm considering just lagging with the two bottom center front/back holes, or maybe with just those two plus two top back holes that I'd drill myself. Thoughts? Finally, I'm considering a "golden rod" style dehumidifier versus one of the "can" style that absorbs water and need to be reset periodically by heating in an oven. Any pros/cons on one style versus the other would be appreciated. Thanks again to everyone for all of your help and advice!
snapper
Re: Questions about gun safe installation First...my guess they don't like the idea of the metal safe sitting on a cold concrete floor. Maybe it will rust on the bottom over many years???? Both of mine are sitting flat on the concrete! I look at it like this...the concrete will not burn and the bottom of the safe will get less hot without the air space under it. Second, the lag bolts are for sucurity purposes...I would honestly think only one would be needed...two is good! Neither of mine are lagged...of course, if they can get the big one out with a few guys...I'll hold the doors for them. Third, I have a dehumidifier rod...never put it in either safe. My basement is finished and there isn't really any moisture in it. When its real humid outside, I run a dehumidifer for the entire basement. I did however throw some of those rosin (sp) packs inside the safe just for safe measure. Personally, I would use the rod over the "can" style if I were to use one. BTW, congrats on your safe! One of those things that make you breathe easier and hope you never need it.
elnor
Re: Questions about gun safe installation Thanks for your comments, snapper. We installed the safe on Saturday, using the two existing lag holes and a rod dehumidifier. It looks nice and it's great to have somewhere close at hand to store important items. Now I just need to fill up all the remaining gun slots so I can buy another one...
