spyderpancake
Saw these pictures of this monstrous alligator gar. I was 8'2", 244.5 lbs, and had a 44.75" girth! It was taken with a bowfishing rig on Lake Sam Rayburn in Texas with a bowfishing rig! It looks like one of those prehistoric monsters! Makes you wonder what else is down there! Buckslayer
Re: Incredibly big gar That is downright insane. I don't know how a bowfishing rig could handle that, and whats more is that things like that live in lakes they swim and boat in! That thing could eat small children! Guest Andrea
Re: Incredibly big gar Now you would think that something that big with huge teeth like that would be a danger to humans. But has anyone ever heard of a person being hurt by one of these? And when I say hurt, I mean attacked while swimming or wading.
hunterfisherman
Re: Incredibly big gar That is the exact reason I have been saving up for a trip to fish for these. They fight like made too. I want a picture of me like that one. Then you have bragging rights over everyone

Its nothing to see them in the lake while swimming and such. They have a mouth full of razors too! In all honestly I have no fear of them until you get them out of the water. They can get aggressive in self defense. The lakes around here draw huge crowds every weekend during the summer. I have yet to hear of someone getting attacked, bitten, etc. Im sure its happened at some point but they honestly arent an aggressive fish. They are in pretty much every lake anywhere around here, Texas, Arkansas, etc. All you need is a fishing lic. and a BIG pole. People snag them while fishing for spoonbill. Its nothing to real in a 50lb gar. Every spring when the sandbass (whitebass) are spawning and chasing shad you can catch gar easily. The spoonbill (paddlefish) are moving upstream then too. Thats a great time to "snag." You can hook 60lb-70lb fish over and over. No guide needed. Just hit any local river and get to work.

But that is the only one I have ever heard of.

Guest outdoorgirl
Re: Incredibly big gar That's a big fish....thats a old fish ....kind of a shame to have killed such a old fish that made it to live long enough to make it to that size. First i thought in the first pic that it was photo shop material. Looked kind of fake with the two guys standing by the fish. then looking at the other two photos it seems to be the real thing.
