RyanH
Guys can I ask for your help? In detail can you please tell me what you guys like to see in a hunting video? I want pros/cons and everything inbetween. Please just give me ideas. Thank you everyone!
ruttinbuc
Re: Hunting Videos This is where your creativity as a video producer needs to show through. A search on all the hunting sites forums should give you an inkling as to what people want to see. Doing something that has not been done is tough to do. It needs to sell. Unfortunately, there are not too many "how to" videos out there anymore. The "shooting" videos are getting to be very old hat. Split the difference and you may be able to come up with a winner. SuperMn106
Re: Hunting Videos I like seein the whole setup, from scouting to hanging the stands. I also like seein the emotion after the hunt. Showing some of the blood trail or trailing the deer. (There has to be a transition from after shooting the animal to recovering the animal. I dont like when it goes from the shot to the hunter next to the animal) Something else that I think would be neat is before the kill shot have something above the animal that shows the yardage or how far the shot was. Also after the shot have a 2-d animal that shows the shot placement and maybe even have the animal in x-ray vision, so that you could see the lungs and heart and liver. Thats all I can think of for now. Mike

SuperMn106
Re: Hunting Videos Also, slow-motion replays after the shot. Mix in some misses if there is any. Maybe the score of the animal afterwards.
huntinsonovagun
Re: Hunting Videos I absolutely HATE acting in hunting videos. I like to see a good 360 degree view of the rack, and also a score. The x-ray view mentioned above could be a trademark!! What a great idea! Could be tough, but also could be worthwhile! JKAPP01
Re: Hunting Videos i like to see a score, along with a slow motion view of the impact of the shot........ a story behind the hunt.....it almost seems that a lot of the videos that guide just puts em in a stand and says here are the deer in the area, shoot this one this one this one or that one.....i LOVE to see hunts of people that have scouted deer pre season or even over a couple years that NAME the deer.........maybe they haven't been able to get close enough or whatever.....biggest pet peeve are hunting actors..........i buy the products and videos because i believe they sell themselves and that they are quality products.....i will tell you who i like to watch.....lee and tiffany.......waddell pry my favorite........stan potts always shows emotion that appears to be sincere.........nick mundt...........bill jordan.......blanton.....**** even rhett akins.....show the preparation of the hunt...gettting the equipment ready.....dressing.....where they store their camo....if they use shampoos or soaps......walking to the stand.....what they drive......i could go on forever so i might have to stop right there unless u want me to send you a personal pm ryan
JKAPP01
Re: Hunting Videos entry and exit holes sorry.....show them tracking the animal....i hate when they doctor it up....put the tongue back in the mouth etc......i specifically remember watching a guy shoot a deer in the spine......dropping it........then showing the footage of him finding the deer and the arrow was nowhere to be found.....i want to see where the freaking arrow hit so if i hit an animal in that spot i know what to look for or how much time to give it...... 257bob
Re: Hunting Videos I like what most probably don't. I don't like hugely edited videos. The quality videos that are popular are so full of edits that 75% of the video is taped just for content. I personally like the over the shoulder videos that don't include looking into the face of the hunter and the trigger squeeze and using the range finder. All these things add to the content of the video, but they were all shot before or after the hunt. I would like to see a quality video without all the editing and flashing back and forth between shots you know weren't possible to get during the hunt. hunterfisherman
Re: Hunting Videos I like the slow motion as well. A little comedy helps too. I don't watch shows where everyone takes everything so serious. Hunting is suppose to be fun. Two of the better shows on right now are Roadtrips and Gett'n Close. I also like Deer and Deer hunter. North American Whitetail is close too. You need information to help us become better hunters, good hunts, and a little humor. We want to learn but we want to see good hunting and laugh too. I would love to see a shot of what the deer sees. Maybe right before the hunter takes the shoot you could cut to a computer generated scene that shows what the animal is seeing in that moment. This would better help me understand how to camo myself and stand placement and other things too.
GWSmith
Re: Hunting Videos I've always liked that Turkey Hunting video you did awhile back Whatever you do...Dont do what made me stop watching the Archers Choice show...where they cut into the middle of a hunt and interupt the action with some stupid slam on each other I like the idea of having the entire hunt(scouting, stand setup, etc.) on a video but the only way I think it would fly would be to have the hunt first. Then have short sections from each phase of the prehunt afterwards fading from one to another with good narration giving a short explaination of what the audience is seeing. Show the Hunt...then give the people a taste of what went into it being successful ...Oh Yeah... Dont forget the 5 W's Who What When Where Why
Tominator
Re: Hunting Videos For God's sake, whatever you do, please, don't do the fake recovery. I hate that more than anything. Follow a freakin' blood trail for crying out loud. Show the blood, we're all big boys and girls, we can handle it. Don't clean up the wound, and don't do the fake "hey, look right over there...." scene. That is so condescending it's not even funny. Insult to the intelligence when the camera person is behind the deer when the hunter comes up on the deer and acts all surprised to find the deer. Other things I'd like to see are the prep times for the hunts. A lot goes on before the hunt with strategy and discussion, but hardly anyone ever shows it. RangerClay
Re: Hunting Videos Things I don't like: 1. I hate it when they fake sincerity. You can tell when they have taken 5 takes of someone walking up to the kill. Thy act like they are walking up for the first time but there are 50 man tracks in the snow. 2. BE HONEST!!! I hate it when a hunter make a bad shot and trys to cover it up. Waddell did this a few episodes ago. They rearranged the animal so you could not see the wound when they got to the animal. I have much more respect for an honest hunter. 3. Do not sit on stools or chairs in front of a fire or studio background at the beginning and end of the show discussing the kill. That drives me nuts. It looks so amateur. What I like: 1. I like seeing impact of the bullet, following the blood trail or seeing the animal drop after the shot. 2. I would like to see much more shotgun deer hunting. 3. I enjoy watching shows when they put on deer drives. It's fun to watch the deer come out and the hunter trying to make split second decisions. 4. I like to see the fun that goes on in hunting camp. All the hyjinks(sp) and fooling around. 5. Gut your own deer and get dirty on TV. If I remember right, I saw you video a coyote hunt that was outstanding. Have you concidered pitching a varmint hunting show to the Outdoor Channel? I know I would watch that every week. I read somewhere a while back that coyote hunts were one of the most requested at the Outdoor Channel. Good Luck Ranger

Mach1
Re: Hunting Videos Lots of good ideas have been mentioned. I like to see behind the scenes stuff at camp, the whole process of scouting, stand placement, food plot prep, etc., basically anything you do to get prepared to hunt. I don't like the same cookie-cutter scences and staged stuff. Be unique, be yourselves, be enthusiastic. Show us as well as tell us why stands are placed in certain areas, using maps, photos, sign in the area. Also when I watch hunting videos, whether it be deer, turkey, waterfowl, etc., I want the host to be kind of like a guide to the viewers if possible by explaining the stand placement, etc. like I mentioned above. And be honest. Don't tell us you've got numerous 170" deer running around if you know that's not the case. If there's mainly 125-140 class deer, tell us that's what are primarily seen in the area. Don't try to pimp your area for holding numerous B&C deer if they're not really there. Basically have fun with it and try to convey your enthusiam for the sport of hunting and spending time with friends & family because that's what it's all about. unioncountyslayer
Re: Hunting Videos I definately like to see full impact and expire of the animal if possible. Plus, i've always thought that the deer has already been found before the camera comes on, then they act like they are looking for it and whata ya know, there it is. I'd like to see footage from the time of kill to climbing down, to tracking the animal.
BowJoe
Re: Hunting Videos I have a unique idea. It may not be the same thing as a a deer hunting video but here goes. Why not show the progression of a first time hunter. From getting his first bow and learning how to shoot to his hunter safety course to his first hunt and so on. I have always thought the best way to get young hunters into hunting was to show other young hunters going through the learning process. Show that light in their eyes when he or she finally gets their bow sighted in and hits a bullseye. Also show the prep from looking on your computer at Google Earth or whatever you use to show your area and some aerial photos of where your stands are placed. Show why you put the stands there and where the deer come from and travel to. The Roadtrips videos don't show that but in a way they are so popular because of the reality of the hunts. I think overall everyone says to just be real. Don't fake it. So many videos go wrong because they get into a rut of the same process over and over again. Just hunt with your buddies and show how much fun and agony each hunt can be. Nobody will think bad if you get ticked or are jumping up and down. It's real. You may even be able to put that young hunter into a single video and market it to The Outdoor Channel or to the general population like Primal Dreams. It can be a tool for hunter recruitment around the country. Just a thought.
wtnhunt
Re: Hunting Videos Would be nice to see everything real and not staged. Cannot stand the videos where the cameraman is behind the dead aninmal when the hunter approaches. Show the real deal with the tongue hanging out and the blood. Show better the shot placements and dont stop the slow-mos just before the arrow or bullet gets to the animal like so many do.
