MUDRUNNER
Re: mechanic please!!?? Yep.first thing I would check would be the tires.A slipped belt will vibrate pretty badly. If the tires check out I would say maybe a c.v. joint, but I would bet it's a tire. If it vibrates when turning one direction at a decent speed it could be a c.v. joint going bad.
double_drop
Re: mechanic please!!?? tires for sure then after that check the struts as well.
mike
Re: mechanic please!!?? putting the back tires on the front did not make the wheel quit shaking so it can't be the tires correct? will struts make the steering wheel shake along with the vibration? BowtechTurkeyHunter
Re: mechanic please!!?? Sounds to me like the caliper isnt working correctly ... but you said you replaced the brakes and ROTORS ... I would have th calipers checked out ... if not that I would thin the CV joint or ball joint can you wiggle the tire if its in park?is there any play in it? mike
Re: mechanic please!!?? not much play in the wheels. and it doesn't shake with braking just at higher speeds. the steering wheel shakes back and forth and the car vibrates. and it can't be in the tires from what a have tried to do by rotating the fronts to the back i don't think. heck i am just a nail beater lmbo!!!! but kinda handy with autos. its got me stumped
Shaun_300
Re: mechanic please!!?? Steel wheels or aluminum? A lot of times if you have steel wheels, mud and dirt will stick to the inside of the rim, which will cause it to go out of balance and give you this type of problem. I've also saw tires that have plenty of tread left, but the inside edges get "feather edged" as us mechanics call it, which is uneven wear on the inside edge. This is caused by improper alignment. This can cause a vibration at highway speeds as you are describing.

dg
Re: mechanic please!!?? If you rotated frt to back and still get strg wheel shake: - jack the frt wheel and see if you get much play while grabbing the tire and shaking at the 3 and 9 o'clock position. If so, you may have a bad tie-rod. If the play is at the 12 and 6 o'clock position, it may be a bad ball joint.
Mirage
Re: mechanic please!!?? did you check to see if your tie rod ends were worn ouit. when i worked for chevy I replaced alot of tie rod ends. If the tie rod ends are ok and all is tight in the front end you? Does thge steering wheel shake back and forth when driving? that is a sure sign of a broken tire belt or loose fron end part

sureshot
Re: mechanic please!!?? tires, prob, feel around them with your hand to see if you can feel a bulge or out of round, both front and back, vibrations really travel, next to that I would make sure the u-joints are ok[if have any] then cv if have them,[cv shoudl be worse while turning or clunk while making a sharp turn,]nud in tires will but fi they were balanced would of been cleaned out, worn parts would and feathered tires but you would easilly notice that!are you sure its a vibration and not a bad miss in the engine? good luck!! MikeB
Re: mechanic please!!?? I agree with the ball joint theory. Also check the joints around the steering gear box and sway bar.
AdvantageTimberLou
Re: mechanic please!!?? first off, when you put the rotors on, did you make sure there was no surface rust hiding on the wheel hub or the back of the rotor, it only takes a little bit to make it not "true" and you could get issues. If the tires are balanced correctly then I would say you have a wheel bearing going bad, I had one go out on the wife's Pontiac Montana at 37,000 miles, just out of warranty! It was a grinding sound and a slight vibration through the pedal and wheel at certain speeds. I would say if the rotors are clean you have a wheel bearing going out. That is around $100.00 or so per side, that is not GM parts price though, the wheel bearing for my wife's van was $300.00 and I told them to keep it, the factory one failed so why use another factory OEM part, I got one (SKF) at NAPA for $125.00 and it runs great 50,000 miles later still going strong!! Good luck!!

[/ QUOTE ] My first instinct would be a broken belt in the tire, and next is the wheel bearing. Pretty common in today's cars. Wheel bearings usually make a sort of deep howling noise that can be felt through the floor. Like others said you could try rotating them front to back to rule out a tire issue. Then I'd take off the front rotors again and clean/wire brush everything good, and then spin the front wheels when jacked up. You can usually hear the bearing grinding if its bad. matt
