PR Dead Centers!!!! (THANKS qt2003)

First off, a BIG Thanks to qt2003 for the 220gr Dead Centers. After he and AJ HIGHLY recommended them, I contacted qt to see if I could get a couple to try, mainly to make sure they would load after what I went trhough with the Barnes MZ's I had last year. Ended up he came to OKC yesterday, and I was able to meet up with him downtown, where he proceeded to hand over HALF A PACK!!!! I WAS gonna wait till it cooled down some, but curiousity got the better of me, so off to the yard I went. I had shot once last night in the dark, as I have also changed powder, so I had 4 left. At 65yds, first 2 shots were about 7" left, but about an inch apart, highly acceptable considering my rest!!! I adjusted my left a little bit, on the next 2 shots, and the last one was about 2"high, but dead on left to right. Only thing I did was dry patch between shots, kinda that "field" type shooting. I am impressed with the accuracy, and was able to retrieve 3 of the bullets, excellent expansion and weight retention. they weighed 215,216, and 208( Iexpected this one to weigh a little less, as it had kinda separated)

Gun: Traditions Buckhunter

Powder: 90gr APP Shockey Gold FFG

Bullets: Precision Rifle 220gr Dead Centers

Distance: 65Yds into dirt pile

Left to right 208, 216, 215 after recovery, original weight was 220gr

Kind of like the most addictive drug you can imagine. Once you shoot them, you're hooked for life. Glad I could get the bullets to you this weekend. Glad you like them. Take care, Greg (GT2003)

Re: PR Dead Centers!!!! (THANKS qt2003)

AJ or qt2003.... Just put an Encore in layaway so I will be shooting sabots this season for the first time. I have read interesting things about the Dead Centers and the QT bullets. What are the differences of the two? Advantages....Disadvantages How are they to load? This is a bullet I plan on Checking out. Right now looking at the 240 grain one. Does it make a difference in a .40 or a .44? Any help will be greatly appreceiated. Thanks

I'll defer to AJ on the finer points of this one. My knowledge is only based on the limited PR bullets I've shot through my gun. There is also a wealth of info. on the www.prbullet.com website. Basically, the way I understand it, the dead centers are designed to penetrate both sides of the animal for a great bloodtrail while still releasing almost all of their energy inside the animal. The QT's are designed to release all their energy inside the animal but not necessarily penetrate both sides. I've not heard of anyone having trouble loading these bullets. The main advantage for me is that they expand so well even without a magnum load, see my other posts. I also have read that they are an extremely flat shooting, long range bullet. But, I have no experience with that aspect of them. AJ can fill you in on anything I said incorrectly as well as some other fine points I'm sure. Go the the prbullet website. There is tons of information that explains their different bullets. Good luck, Greg

Re: PR Dead Centers!!!! (THANKS qt2003)

Greg hit most of the high points between the two. The QT40 was designed for quicker expansion and not get complete penetration. I have shot a lot of deer with them and usually full penetration was the normal experience. Granted the Northern Virginia deer are substantially smaller than the ones in Manitoba so they worked very well for me. The QT40 also has a full diameter (.40) belt around the bullet and has a boat tail. It is a very accurate bullet.

The Dead Center has a smaller pocket behind the polymer tip so it will not expand quite as fast as the QT40 but it still does a wonderful job on game. It has a longer ogive and a boat tail.

As to which bullet you should choose, its up to you. The smaller diameter bullets will have higher ballistic coefficients, so they will fly a bit flatter and carry more energy at long range when compared to an equal weight bullet of a larger diameter. I shoot the .357" bullets in my .45 caliber ML and they kill deer just as dead as the .40 or .44 caliber bullets in my .50 caliber.

Re: PR Dead Centers!!!! (THANKS qt2003)

AJ and Greg.... Thanks for all the good info. I think I'm going to start with the 220 grain Dead Centers or maybe the 240 gr, then try the QT40's. Will be trying loose 777. I understand its about 20% hotter than pyrodex. Any thoughts to the American Pioneer powder? Is it as hot as 777 or more like pyrodex? Thought I might give it a try. Again thanks

Re: PR Dead Centers!!!! (THANKS qt2003)

I am using 90gr powder. I will say this, after 5 shots, running a dry patch down the barrel, when I took the plug out to clean it, and looked down the barrel, it was pretty darn clean. Now the patch would have some crud on it, but I don't think it is nearly as bad as pyrodex. I need to go out and shoot a couple of shots and not swab the barrel and see how bullets load. May do that this weekend.
