Changes in NY So zone next year

All the bow hunters I've talked to in NY are not happy with the proposed (to be rammed through whether you like it or not) season change of splitting the bow season and inserting a week of muzzleloading in the middle.

Any thoughts, opinions, or experiences with this type of season arrangement?

Re: Changes in NY So zone next year

In a sence the DEC is stopping the bowhunters in that bowhunting will not be allowed during the early ML season.

Hunters as a group tend to be winers in that a common perception is that the DEC/DNR exists for their benefit. This partially true - they exist to serve multiple interests. We as hunters are ONE of THEIR tools to manage wildlife. So, whe a given population is being brought under control (acceptable levels for all groups) management partcices/objectives may change. This is happening now in NY.

Here in MO you can bowhunt during muzzleloader season but you just have to wear hunter orange like everyone else. Seems a good way to keep everyone hunting with only a tiny inconvenience. Some might complain but it doesn't bother me. Deer don't seem to notice me any more often than when I am not wearing orange.

It sounds like typical bowhunters. They do whine the most of any group. So they get to share the woods with ML hunters, whats the big deal? No one is stopping them from bowhunting.

AJ- I would not expect such a response from a moderator!!!!!!

That's the point- they ARE proposing to stop bowhunters during that BP season!!!! shocked.gif It would be one thing if the Archers could continue to hunt- but as proposed, they would be forced to pick up a smokepole or stay home.

P.S. AS Muzzy said, the first year they included the early Muzzleloader season during the Archery season here in Pa, they said since BP guys could only hunt does, then Archers had to abide by the same rules!!!! There was a big uprising by the Archers and the following year, we were allowed to hunt Buck and/or doe- As it should be!!!!! There's no reason to impose on us, just because we choose to hunt with a stick and string!!!!! shocked.gif

But I don't take it(you calling us "whiners") personally.....................as long as you don't take it personally if I call you a LAZY hunter! wink.gif

But we're on the same side here- lets not resort to name- calling! grin.gif

Re: Changes in NY So zone next year

I came to this ML Room to get some fresh air but I see things are not changing.

I will say this. I agree in part with AJ. Many of the bowhunters have been adding their own personal elitest opinions to this forum and it makes me sick. Last week one person wrote "The only ethical hunters in the woods are bowhunters" mad.gif That ticked me off. I choose not to bowhunt because I do not have the time for it. It does not make me less of a hunter. I believe we are all brother sportsmen and women. All you guys are doing is feeding right out of the Anti's hand. Divide and they will conquer us.

My 2 cents

ADK,

RIGHT! Forunately we live in place that allows us to speak up.

I do not have a lot of time to type something up because I am on my way out the door to go to the southern tier. So I will make this quick.

I have read most of what everyone has written and I agree with what most of you have written. You have always fair and straight forward. That is why I said many of you and not all.

I believe that the DEC plan is FULL of holes.

I believe greed and the insurance industry dictates my deer season.

I do not believe in antler restrictions.

I believe that the early black powder will be a great excuse for poaching bucks. That was proven when we were told not to shoot bucks in our early ML season for the last few years.

I believe that when some of us shouted about in-lines and scopes on a primative rifles should not be allowed many of you did not join in. I remember being told to shut up and sit down. Now you will have the next closest thing to a center fire in the middle of your archery season. I knew this would come back to haunt you. (but this is another topic).

As I have said beforeI am not a bow hunter. I have no issues with bow hunting. That is why I said I would be willing to drive deer to you guys in Smackdown '05. I just get a little annoyed with the God-like attitude a few project. That same attitude I described when I asked if I was welcome at Smackdown '04. Remember my story about what happened to me at the state fair.

I will listen to what all of you have to say. I will form my opinion and when the meetings are in my area I will voice my opinion.

I just came to this room for a change of pace. See you guys Monday

Re: Changes in NY So zone next year

In PA, the early muzzleloader season is doe only and you can still bowhunt if you like. the dilema, if their is one, is do you want to be in the stand witht eh muzzleloader and take the chance that a good shooter buck shows up and all you can do is look. I have found that season has little to no effect on my archery hunting and I do hunt with an inline when the season permits but never in October. Is the NY proposal similar or will you not be allowed to bowhunt or can you shoot a buck with the muzzleloader?
