New winter plot

Been working on this spot for a little bit whenever I get a chance, hope to be planting my hamann farms winter blend this next weekend. First started by clearing a lane down the hill to get the tractor in and pushed up the brush and opened it up a bit. Tried to pile most of the brush up in a spot where it might make a good little bedding area. The blind is to the east south east up the hill, can see it in this first pic. Third pic the trail I cleared in the middle of the pic will be planted in wintergrazer rye and winter wheat, and runs about 30 yards from a ladder stand which is to the north of the plot up on a little ridge, will also be planting rye and wheat going up the hill next to the blind to help control erosion. The river at the closest point is about 90 yards beyond the piled up brush in the second pic and a crossing that used to be a preferred near the closest point.

looks like a nice secluded spot. should be a great staging area reight before dark. How much sunlight do you get on that spot?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, Todd. This area has been used as a staging area in the past. Was pretty dreary when I took the pics yesterday. Hopefully will get a minimum of 5 hours of sunlight a day now, and should get more than that soon when some leaves start falling.

LOL Martin. The river is about 90 yards behind the brush. It is pretty snakey, have seen snakes while hunting from the ladder stand just to the north of this plot on several occasions and walked up on too many to count going through this area over the years.

Re: New winter plot

Referring to the first pic, what is beyond the tree stand? Looks like an open field? If so, perfect location for early-season evening hunts, maybe all day during the rut. Also bet it will be good for turkeys. If you rabbit hunt, those brush piles will be magnets (provided rabbits live in riverbottoms loaded with snakes, not much like that in NY).

I like the way you planted different species on the trails, makes for an additional edge effect, and we all know how deer like edges. Are there perrenials in that winter mix?? Also, are you going to plant perrenials on the trails in the spring?

Yes there is an open field behind the blind in the first picture. Have a plot out in front of that blind that is approximately an acre of trefoil and clover that the deer and turkeys are hammering now.

This down the hill spot has pretty well always been a bit of a transition or staging area, I see and hear a lot of deer in this area either right before light or right after dark, catching them coming from and going to the river.

Have no current plans for perenials in the spot where the winter mix is now, the winter mix is a blend of annuals. I have not considered using perenials along the trails at this point, will however continue to maintain our current pennington and hamann farms perenial mixes of clovers.

And yes the brush piles do maike great spots for swamp rabbits, we have a crap load of them despite the coyote problems.

Re: New winter plot

That tree stand is going to put some venison in the freezer this year for sure! One of my most productive stands is in an area that looks very similar to that.

I use oats for my harvest plots here in NY, and they die over winter, so I can start fresh with something in the spring, or allow weeds to grow up until I plant oats again in the fall. In TN your annuals will overwinter, won't they? What do you do then, let them go to seed or mow them and let the weeds grow till fall? I know, it probably depends on what happens this fall, lol!

This is my first time using this annual winter mix and the first time with a plot in this spot. Guess we will see.
