Strut10
Went out a little while ago to walk around the Strut10 Ranch a bit. I was walking an old woods road that runs about 10 yards inside the woodsline. It parallels an old overgrown field of goldenrod & a few chance pine trees for several hundred yards. There's a place I saw when mowing the road a few weeks back where two major trails come in from the field and cross the road about 45 yards apart. Well.....I was checking that out with hopes of finding a decent place to hang a stand and as I walked up to where the first trail comes on to the road, there, under an overhanging branch are not one, but two scrapes. Definitely not turkey scratching or something else. Two scrapes about 18" to 2 feet in diameter. Unbelievable!!! I wasn't even figuring on being able to find a rub for another week/week & a half. But there it is. Somebody's gettin froggy already.

VTbowman
Re: Found a scrape.....Aug. 23rd!!!!!! Its probably an old community scrape thats used every year. Just a guess. I have one thats on a short log road connecting two field ends, under the same branch, every year for about 8 or 9 years. I have a stand and a food plot real close to it (20 yards or so but I can't shoot at it) and I saw some activity in it in July when I planted the plot. TreeWalker
Re: Found a scrape.....Aug. 23rd!!!!!! I read one time that alot of scrapes are actually made out of boredum(spelling)........this usually occur in staging areas, where the bucks keep safe before entering their feeding areas........then of course there are the territorial scrapes.........man to think, it is almost time ?!?!?! Strut10
Re: Found a scrape.....Aug. 23rd!!!!!! This could be considered a staging area, I guess. It's still several hundred yards from the bean fields. But, it's just inside the last large block of woods before you get to the beans. All the rest of the way is weeds and brush, etc. Could also be called a "community scrape" as there's usually activity under these limbs each year. Don't know what the official name for it is.......I just call it exciting.

Ever think of putting up a cam at that spot?
Strut10
Re: Found a scrape.....Aug. 23rd!!!!!! [ QUOTE ] Ever think of putting up a cam at that spot? [/ QUOTE ] Thought about putting up two.......one on each of the trails coming in from the field. But, I already kinda know there's a couple (at least) shooter bucks hanging in that area. Buddy of mine saw them about a week back. So i think I'll just stay the heck out of there and leave it alone 'til it's time to kill.

Fullfan
Re: Found a scrape.....Aug. 23rd!!!!!! Strut. Last year on Sept 1st I found a scrape here in Pa. I put my camera over it and got pic's of 9 bucks, and a bunch of does.None of the bucks were what I would call shooters, and some were still in velvet. snapper
Re: Found a scrape.....Aug. 23rd!!!!!! Been seeing several bucks in hard bone already...everything I read says that a buck testorones (sp) start to rise as soon as the velet is off. I once found an early scrape...for giggles (cause I didn't hunt this area) I put some old buck urine in the scrape and on an over hanging limb. Put the trail camera on it...had 4 different bucks smelling and even some does smelling the scrape and branch. Thought it was kinda interesting that 1. they came into this buck urine that early and 2. it was no where near being fresh...it was OLD! They still showed up to smell it. Strut10
Re: Found a scrape.....Aug. 23rd!!!!!! Just an update.............. I hung a stand over this scrape a couple days after I found it and vacated the premises. Well........I had to drive past it the other day to turn my Jeep around. It was still about the same size, with all the dirt nice and worked up with about a 6" diameter wet spot smack in the middle. Worked that morning. Looks like a pretty hopeful spot.
