Re: varmint rifle scope?

3 X 12 would be fine as would the 4 X 16. I use a Burris 4.5X14 and love it. I used to use a 3x9 and killed many at the 250-325 range. 350 400 is not an easy shot no matter what magnification you use as bullet drop and drift will be the real issue at those distances.

As far as your question about magification either will be fine.

Re: varmint rifle scope?

I have used various scopes on them out to some long ranges. Scopes from 3-9x32 through 10-40x50 all worked fine. As long as the scope is clear enough to give accurate sight placement, mechanically stable enough to hold zero, and does not shift the POI as the magnification changes, it will be fine. The majority of my varmint guns wear 6-20x scopes. Its my personal favorite for tiny groups and long range shooting on small targets.

The benefit of this magnification range is it allows the shooter to reduce the magnification level when its hot and the mirage is boiling wildly. When it cools down enough to crank the magnification up, it makes longer distance sight placement easier.

Re: varmint rifle scope?

Go to Bass Pro and look through the Redhead 6x18x50. They run right at $100 and are a decent scope for the money.

Thats what I topped my .243 with and Im hammering 20oz soda bottles at 200yds. Im going to buy another Rem 700 in a deer cal and will top it with the same scope.
