Re: tracks can you tell the difference??

Most of the time a buck will be opened up toward the tip of the hoof and the dew claw marks behind the hoof are present in the track. Doe generally show a closed track with no dew claws. Depending on the surface and how soft it is could change the general rule. I have seen a doe track made on a muddy trail with a slope and it resembled a buck track, dew claw marks and all.

I can't............not unless there's a deer standing in the track.

I will usually assume if a track is super-huge, it was made by a buck. But we've got some hereford-sized doe running around the ranch, too. So that's not even a 100% safe assumption.

SOMETIMES IT REAL TOUGH TO TELL BUT I ALSO AGREE THAT THE BIGGER THE TRACK ITS MOST LIKELY A BUCK, ALSO AGREE THAT THE DEW CLAW USUALLY GIVES IT AWAY!

Exactly...Does do have Dew claws and theres no way to tell the difference consistently other than smaller size deer/ bigger size deer.

GWSmith said it. There is not great way consistant way.

It's similar to telling if the bare foot track of human is a man or woman.

Just be careful when using the dew claws as an aid in guessing. Soft gound will skew your beliefs.

Re: tracks can you tell the difference??

I believe there are those who can reliably tell a buck track from a doe track, and I'll bet they don't simply rely on one feature of the track alone. One thing I can say for sure is that I am not one of those people. Sure, I can make a general call on the likelyhood of a huge splayed out monster track being a buck. Would I bet the farm on it?.......not on your life....lol. With my luck it would turn out to be some fat slob of a doe with big feet.
