how far wiill a slug kill a deer?

just wanted to know how far a 12 ga. 2 3/4 rifled slug would be lethal on a deer. Also, what range should I sight in my sights for? Last, has anybody ever had any experience with the hi-viz triangular sight system? Does moving the rear sight fowards and backwards along the rib really change the elevation?

Re: how far wiill a slug kill a deer?

with rifled slugs ive taken deer ay 75-100 yrds .100yrds is pushing it if you ask me even though i have done it. but i know my gun very well ive used it for deer over 15 yrs. i use an 870 with a smooth bore barrel and rilfed slugs. i prefer 50 yrds and under. now if you use a rilfed borrel and sabot i would say 120-150 is not un forseen. but my self i do like closer shots. were i hunt you dont get shots much over 50yrds very often. witch ever you use take the time to learn how your gun preforms at ranges you think youll be shooting. but dont over shoot your abbilaty or what range your comfortable at. just my 2 cents and good luck

I shot a buck at 115 one time, he was broadside and no obstruction. The olny thing I can say is I knew the gun and what it would do. It holds 3" groups at 100 yards with fedral premium 2 3/4" shells, I will say with 3" shells they tumble and don't hold any kind of group.

With a smooth bore barrel and open sights I would keep it under 100 yards.Depending on what type of barrel or choke you have probably under 75 would be better.Definately go shoot it and see for yourself what your effective range would be.There's not a worse feeling than wounding a deer and not recovering it.I won't shoot mine past 75 yards with a rifled barrel and sabots.I'll probably get a scope this year to make my range a little longer.

I've been slug hunting for 25 years this fall. MUDRUNNER is exactly correct. Plus you are shooting with open sights. At 100 yards I'll bet even money your open sights will completely cover the deer, making for an inaccurate shot.

If you were shooting with a rifled barrel and sabot slugs, plus using a scope, you can reach out past 100 yards. If you have a smooth bore, then 100 yards is your maximum range.

My response would be that if you have to ask others, you had better shoot no farther than you have tested the gun at. The only one who can give you the correct answer is yourself, your gun, and a measured shooting range. If you have to rely on someone else for the answer, the chances are that you have not spent an adequate time shooting and familiarizing yourself with your gun.

If you are asking about energy delivered by a 12 guage slug, I can assure you that it will get the job done a lot farther than you can be accurate.

I still shoot a smooth bore Remington 870 12 Ga. , I usually try not to shoot over 100 yrds, though I have harvested deer at that distance! But I also lost the Biggest buck of my life last gun season at 115 yds. Sickening!!!! frown.gif

I dont know anything about the sight. But i sight my gun in at 100 yds. I have killed a doe at 150 with a 12 ga. and i use 2 3/4 in rifled slugs. I aimed almost at the top of her back and when i shot she hit the ground but it was the last day of season and i had a doe tag left thats the only reason i even tried that shot. 100 yds good safe distance should be real accurate.

Re: how far wiill a slug kill a deer?

The problem with over 100 yards is penetration and lack thereof....Some of these guys have killed deer out beyond that, but also you read that one guy lost a mature buck at 115 yards. My theory is if the gun is scoped im fine to 100 yards without a scope keep it 50 and under.....

Another thing to note. It doesn't matter if that gun will shoot 500 yards, the only thing that matters is how far you are comfortable shooting...And by comfortable I mean grouping consistantly. Not just hitting the target one in every 3 shots.....GL and be safe
