Truck Troubles

I'm no mechanic. blush.gif

I drive an 89 Dodge Dakota (automatic) 2 wheel drive.

Today I lost Park in my gear shift on the steering column. 1st is now in neutral, neutral is now in reverse, and reverse is where Park should be. Seems like everything just slipped up a notch...LOL.

Now I have to park the truck and put the emergency brake on so it doesn't roll away.

Does anyone know if I can fix this myself, or do I need to pay the toll to the troll ..er..I mean mechanic crazy.giffrown.gif

Re: Truck Troubles

Hey Buckee sounds like the linkage nut loosened up some. You need to block the tires from rolling, jack the truck up on the front drivers side, put a jack stand under the drivers side, look on the drivers side of the tranny, you will see a rod coming down pointing forward to the front side of the tranny, there will be a brace that bolts into the tranny with the the rod going through it,this is your shifter linkage and there should be a nut that tightens the rod down into this brace. When you know the tranny is in park take the rod and pull it forward into the brace which is your shifter linkage and tighten the nut back down,This should have you back in proper gear placement.

this is a pretty simple deal if it is all that is wrong.

Re: Truck Troubles

Hey buckee do you know if your shifter has a cable that goes to the transmission or a shaft from under the hood you should be able to tell. If its a cable there is probably and adjust clip that has popped out or broken. If it is a shaft the adjustment bolt has come loose. That should be an easy fix as well. set your parking brake and chock the wheels. If you gotta friend handy have hime help to hold the brake" be carefull not to let the truck roll over you"

Then find park on the shifter or neut. then manualy put the shifter rod that hooks to the transmission in park if you can i say park because you know that is all the way up or down posion the tighten bolt if it has loosen up, if it is tight look to see if it slippedthen you will have to loosen it before you start. You can pm me or send me some picks of the setup. I dont work on dodge but i stayed in a holiday inn express last night......lol no im a gm tech o 16 yeras

Re: Truck Troubles

Well, I really thought I had it. blush.gif

Now I have it in Park, which is actually neutral, and reverse is now drive. I don't have reverse or park now. I'm frustrated.

I notice I have a transmission leak also. Would low tranny fluid do funny things like that?

Looks like tow-truck material to me.

I just talked to my mechanic, and he said something has broken in the Transmission. He also said he probably has the parts to fix it, in the shop, which is good news.

Now I don't feel like a dunce blush.gif

Re: Truck Troubles

We call it a neutral drop.

What you do is, put it in neutral, floor it and then put the baby in drive. Thats some Kansas fun for ya.

Heck I even did it to my Hummer. grin.gif
