Guest rds
I switched to sabots this year for deer hunting from powerbelts. I have people telling me that with the sabots I have to scrub between each shot because it leaves melted plastic in the barrel. I also have people telling me that you can fire several shots just like any other bullet with just a spit patch and a couple dry ones. Whos right? hunterfisherman
Re: Sabots I shoot sabots and as long as you use good powder you can get a couple of shots off if needed. If you have time or are on the range you should run a damp and then dry patch after every shoot but I have not seen what they are talking about with the plastic. I shoot a TC Omega and 777 pellets with shockwave sabots
RangerClay
Re: Sabots rds, welcome to the forums! My best friend also used powerbelts (successfully might I add) in his omega then a gun shop owner told him he should be shooting shockwave sabots. He bought some shockwaves but found he practically had to use a hammer to seat a second bullet. He is going back to powerbelts this fall. AJ
Re: Sabots I spit patch between shots with my stinky muzzleloaders. It provides a constant level of fouling and my gun will shoot extremely consistant this way. Yes, I also do it in the field. I scrub the plastic out after every 25 shots or so. The level of plastic fouling that can remain in the bore depends on a few things like bullet velocity, sabot construction, and bore roughness. Let your gun tell you when it needs to be scrubbed. When the accuracy goes away, its time for some work.
VTbowman
Re: Sabots 1st lets just state that every gun is differnet EVEN if its the same make and model gun. With that said not all ML projectiles will preform the same for everone. I have NEVER heard of sabots melting due to bore friction. This sounds weird to me since ignition of 100g to 150g of black power has a ton of flame and they do not melt at all during that. I use 250g shockwaves in my Encore, as do a few others I know, and all we ever do is a spit patch and dry patch inbetween shots. Then a decent solvent patch/dry patch or 3 about every 10 to 12 shots. My brother just bought his 1st ever firearm. It is an Omega and he has never shot a rifle before this seriously. Never bench shot nor sighted-in anything before. He had 1-2 inch groups at 100 yards with 15 shots. This was without bore sighting the scope too. Sabots are the way to go IMHO. Again.. Guest rds
Re: Sabots Thanks guys, I never heard about the plastic melting either, but it's what I was being told. RangerClay, thanks for the hello. I liked the power belts too, but they just wouldn't give a good grouping in my gun. My Hornady XTP's give better groups and probably alittle better now that I know I don't have to scrub between every shot and can leave a little bit of fouling in the barrel. Thanks again. GWSmith
Re: Sabots Neighbor...I spit patch dry patch inbetween shots on the range. I shoot an entire box of Hornady XTP's, w/90FFg, MMP sabot without doing anything different and the accuracy is still there. Thorough cleaning after every range shoot and you'll be good to go everytime BTW...I say "Neighbor" because I live in Sylvan Beach...but I have a Blossvale Mailing Address

Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: Sabots LMBO!!! I live just 20 miles or so from you guys. I never worry about plastic. I swab and when I get home I run a brass brush. How many manufacturers really stress the plastic fouling? I wonder if you occasionally shoot a REAL bullet if that helps to "clean out" the plastic. if it really is a problem that is. As you can tell, I'm a bit skeptical of it accumulating in masses large enough to influence the shot.
