johnf
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. Ok now that we've got that out of the way and AJ approves. I've got to handle a few of the survivors and I'm seriously considering getting one in 308 for myself. What do you think about them.

Jeramie
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. Ive been told the stocks compromise a lot of accuracy. Personally I like the way they feel and want to pick one up in a .223 for plinking and such. Ive never been to the range but I have gotten some bad feedback on the stock... johnf
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. I really like the feel of the stock and thought it would help in off hand shooting. As far as my question, I know the 308 is a great caliber, the question was meant to be more toward the stock design. I guess I ddin't word it well. too_pointer
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. [ QUOTE ] I'm cheap. So sue me. I like the handi rifle and that's probibly going to be the only kind of rifle I'll buy. I think if you'll read my last post too pointer you'll be satisfied with my decision. [/ QUOTE ] We crossed threads at that time. I'm happy you were willing to make that decision. I have nothing against the handi rifle and will probably own one or two at some time. It was the calibur I thought was too small. I hope the best for your daughter and you on your hunts too_
johnf
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. I'm still thinking about getting the survivor in 223 to plink and pracice with or maybe the 308 to hunt with. I really like the way it feels. too_pointer
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. john, do you hunt predictors ? I will have a .223 in my future sometime, and like you, it would be fun just to plink with . I was going to buy a .308, and at the last minute, and help from in here, decided to get the 25-06. It has more kick than I thought it would, but its o.k. too_
johnf
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. I've got a 25-06 and love it. The recoild doesn't bother me but is a little more than I expected. I have done a little varmit hunting and we have a lot of yotes around here and I'd like to do more. AJ
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. I am not a big fan of the injection molded stocks anywhere near the barrel. I want something rigid to support the front of the gun and not flex during the shot. As for the buttstock, that is up to you. As long as it does not flex and allow the gun to skew during the shot, it will be fine. If you wanted the thumbhole stock you could combine the plastic buttstock with a wood forend. It may look a little wierd, but it will function a lot better. You can even paint the wood forend black to match. I know you said you are cheap, but if you wanted to make a very cool Handi Rifle, you can add a nice wood stock that will make it custom to you and unique. johnf
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. I'd probibly be more likely to put that on my 25-06 because it's my best shooter, but I reallly like the looks of the laminated stock that it has on it. Those are some really nice looking stocks. wtnhunt
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. Personally John, I would get or have gotten here a .243 or a 25-06, but that is just me. My oldest daughter is pretty small. She has been shooting a .243 since she was around 8 year old. She killed her first deer last year at age 9 with a .243. She got her own rifle for Christmas last year, a .243, I put a limbsaver pad on it for her to soften what little recoil it had. She shoots it without complaining about recoil.
Guest highwayman
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. john we had a H&R single shot (same gun as yu are looking at) in 243 win and it had very little recoil that even my 8 year old daughter shot the lights out of it. it did have the heavy bull barrel so made carrying it hard for her but i took her hunting and carried it and also made sure she shot off a rest so she wouldnt have to try and steady it herself. she loved it and my wife as well. i could personally shoot under 1" groups with it at hundred yards. i dont get into all the technical jargon just can tell you from personal trial and error. M00N
Re: Ok, I\'ve made up my mind, now which version. Same here I can tell you from personal trial and error. I'm a woman hunter. I was always very sensitive to recoil on guns when I was a young girl starting out in hunting. My father had bought me a Remington Model Seven in .243 Win and put a bipod on it for me along with a nice scope. The recoil on the gun, while wearing my hunting outfit, wasn't noticeable. Especially when I had a deer in the sights, as I'd be too focused on my target to feel the recoil or hear the blast. When at the target range my father would just pad the inside of my shoulder if it bothered me ever. It only ever bothered me one time and that was the first time I shot it because I didn't listen and press the gun into my shoulder enough. That was my own fault and I learned from it. Even with me being sensitive to recoil on guns that gun never caused me any fear of shooting it. I really like the .243 Win caliber and still hunt deer with it today due to I like its accuracy and flat shooting.
