Not Just Me! (Oklahoma Harvest Count)

I thought I was having a really bad season. I finally nailed a doe but other then that it has STUNK. I was reading in the Tulsa World, today, that the overall count was way, way down.

They claim the the winding down of the Rut was opening weekend of Rifle season (two weeks ago). I never saw any hard rutting activity. It almost started but tapered off in just a few short days. Opening weekend was full of Cold rain and bad weather. It was the same case during ML season.

Bad conditions and a really sporadic rut has killed the harvest numbers for this year. The article read that most of the deer killed in Oklahoma were killed opening weekend of Rifle but his year the numbers were way, way off. Even the busiest check station in Oklahoma is reporting much lower numbers then usual.

It looks like next years herds will be much larger then usual due to the low kill numbers. It also appears that many of the smaller bucks may very well survive this season due to the fact Rifle season ends Sunday.

We have archery season until the end of December and then two weeks of Archer for doe only in January but it doesn't look like we are going to come anywhere close to the usual harvest here in Oklahoma.

And I though I was just stinking it up this year....

That makes me feel a little better....

Re: Not Just Me! (Oklahoma Harvest Count)

I never really noticed any hard rutting activity. I did have a couple days of does being chased, that was it. Both times were during rifle season. They were all BIG bucks too. Still have seen more bucks than does, again, most have been small, but I am not complaining. I wonder if the warm weather was the cause?? Maybe they were running does at night. I saw 2 BIG bucks opening Saturday, but I was bowhunting.....no shot even at less than 15 yards. Oh well....they'll be bigger next year. Shoot, the season ain't over yet!!

It seems to me not as many deer have been killed, but there have been more BIG bucks killed. Just my own little observation......... smirk.gif Keep at it.....

Re: Not Just Me! (Oklahoma Harvest Count)

i saw more rutting behavior during black powder season and the week after BP season. The buck I shot was chasing a doe. I think that the poor weather had more to do with it than anything. When we have great weather during opening weekend the harvest numbers are up and bad weather results in lower numbers.

This might make for an exciting last month of bowhunting.

I agree with most of you guys, as far as less deer being killed. But I think the rut hit hard early november and was coming to an end the first weekend of rifle. I could be wrong, but that is what I noticed in my area. Since peak rut wasn't during rifle, this hurt the overall numbers. I agree with huntinsonovagun, there has been a lot of BIG deer killed oin the state so far. I have seen several monsters shot this year in the okie state, including the 196 incher shot by my buddy 1/2 mile from the place I hunt. Me and my buddies saw a lot of deer chasing does hard all throughout the bow season in between ML and rifle. This is just my opinion, and it may be wrong,

It's been a mixed bag of weather up here in Saskatchewan as well. Good start at the beginning of the season slow in October, November was better in the first week but dramatically less travel by the deer during shooting hours and more nocturnally.

I was banking on a nice 160 + typical I saw early on and he has not been showing up until dark. Deer in general have been spotty over the very short rut we experienced also. Weird season all around!

WOW..That's sound like the same exact senario that has happened here in Vermont..How wierd is that ??? I'm hoping to atleast better the big ZERO during our rifle season to atleast a doe during our ML season that starts this Saturday... I hope things start to look-up as well for the rest of Ya. Old MaMa Nature just isn't playing nice to any of us this year by the looks. Atleast the women are having a decent season..LOL

Calling me a women?

I'm not doing to bad. Got me two so far..

I am hoping for a ML deer since I have never taking one in the 7 years of owning this ML...

As for our numbers. They are way down.

the lowest buck kill during rifle season since 1945. We literally are at 1/2 of our normal harvest numbers... In all the seasons.

Pretty sad in these parts too. Don't feel alone OK...

Well I had the best season of my life, I shot my biggest buck and saw plenty more deer, the whole gang and other gangs that we hunt with were all very successful. I am up in Arnprior, Ontario, which is 20-30 minutes west of Ottawa. I hunt up near Pembroke, Ontario. It was a very memorable season.

here in m,ichigan the harvest count is down also....they just had an article in the newspaper yesterday about it.....i think its due to bad (rain, warm) weather and alot of farmers were late to cutting the corn...i still see alot of corn fileds that haven't been cut! oh well, hopefully it makes for a great season next year. or a good late bow season smile.gif

Re: Not Just Me! (Oklahoma Harvest Count)

Dont feel bad bud, at least you got a doe. Not looking good for me, when I have gone this late in the year without killing a deer in the past, I ended up not killing a deer that year. My wife has put the only deer in the freezer for us here this year. Has not really been any noticeable rutting activity here this year at all.

Starting to get some cooler temps, got the first good hard frost of the year last night/this morning and temps will maybe start to get to where they are supposed to be. Sure hope things pick up here soon, closing day in Jan is gonna be here before I know it.

Yep, It was a change being forced to hunt deer out of rut this year, but it could have always been worse I suppose. I just hope that this isn't a sign of lower deer populations than most people think we have. I guess only next year will tell. My county usually drops 1000+ by this time of year.....we have turned in only 448 as of Wednesday at all check stations.

On a better note, archery season has higher kill totals than normal.

Well, I can't add much. I'm almost tagged out down here. Been seeing loads of deer. More than usual do to some clearcutting going on South of my property.

If I'm not mistaken, McCurtain County is either on track to either tie or break last years season total.

Three Rivers produced a 181 and some change buck!!
