slughunter
Re: how big? my food plot is 1/4 of an acre and surrounded on all sides by woods. I have some smaller ones too. I dont have any tractors or discers so I have to do it all with an ATV and drag that has big spikes, then I put 4 synder blocks on it, works alright but not for big areas. hope your plots work out good. -shane
wtnhunt
Re: how big? My smallest plot is a brand new plot down in a wooded area and is probably between 1/6th and an 1/8th of an acre. Most my plots are 1/4 acre our bigger though.
sskybnd
Re: how big? most of our plots are in the middle of the woods between bedding areas and creek beds, they average 20yrds by 50 yrds, dont know how much that is by acres, but for bowhunting to me its just right. Guest luckyman4
Re: how big? I've made harvest plots as small as 20' x 20' and have had very good luck with them. Sometimes in wooded areas, that's all you have for good sunlight. There is a picture of the plot wtnhunt is talking about on another post. . . perfect small plot IMHO. Generally speaking, its much more about location than size. BTW, 20 yds x 50 yds is approximately 1/5 acre.
rhine16
Re: how big? got three small plots.... one about 20X120, one 20X40, one 70X60.... also got one that is an acre
Guest anderson3
Re: how big? sq2, no set answer to that question. As others are saying, all sizes can work well. Depends on how the property is laid-out. I should mention that small plots of corn, beans, or peas can get over-eaten quickly if you have a high population of deer. Try for multiple plots of different things, to add diversity to your food sources. Plan for all four seasons if you can.
OUTSIDER
Re: how big? There is nothing wrong with putting them anywhere where there is an open canopy spot in the woods. If you find where an oak fell plant something in the sunspot, you'd be surprised what will pop up.
slughunter
Re: how big? check out this plot, cant be much bigger than 15'x10' and yet I get 3-5 deer in here pretty often. So to me its all about what you have planted and where its located, I planted this right in the middle of a big woods outside of the bedding area and there is a trail going right by it. its planted with monster mix. the deer love it. -shane
