Guest mnbuckbuster
I am currently in Central MN getting ready for whitetail rifle season comin up here in early november. I have a very wide ranged question. I am moving south central Montana in bout 6 months or so and I am more then excited to persue BIG game hunting out west. I realize its going to be a whole nother ball game there and I am just curious kind of where I should start in regards to hunting Elk. I would like to if possible to be ready try and bag one late next year. I want to be as ready as possible. I would appreciate any tips or advice. OJR
Re: Beginner of BIG Game Hunting Some things to consider: 1. Rifle, Ammo & Scope. 2. Area to hunt. 3. What elevation. 4. Clothing. 5. Spotting scope. 6. Backpack. 7. Knives & Saw. There is more but these are a few to get you started.
rifleman25
Re: Beginner of BIG Game Hunting Find someone from here, or a local to show you the ropes, even if it means making a couple scouting trips with you. Also get your hands on some maps of U.S Forest Service, National Forest, National Grassland, and BLM maps. Montana also has a program called Block Management you might want to find some of those properties as well. Buy the best European optics and go after it. Guest andymansavage
Re: Beginner of BIG Game Hunting Be sure to get a copy of the application guidelines so that you can get any paperwork done in time. Like rifleman said, make some friends who hunt when you get there and they will be your greatest source of help. Andy
Guest Danbo
Re: Beginner of BIG Game Hunting We have found some nice hunting spots by simply talking to the locals. Bus drivers are the best. The hunting is basically the same but multiplied in its physical difficulty by 10X. Find a buddy and have the time of your life!!! Western hunting is the best. rifleman25
Re: Beginner of BIG Game Hunting Remember that mopst western applicatins are due in early in the year. Jan- April is common for most. Might also conside a deer or antelope hunt the first year as they are easy to come by and land is readl=ily available in the southeastern Montana Prairie. Guest mnbuckbuster
Re: Beginner of BIG Game Hunting I appreciate the replies. I am very pumped to get into a new game with big game. I just bought a remington 30-06 with a scope. I will be moving to Red Lodge, MT in mid march - early april. I also need to check on residency for hunting for licensing. I dont think i will be to late. I hope not. I might have to purchase a big game license as a non resident this spring like rifleman25 mentioned. Advice and tips is very appreciated. Guest Phaseolus (BeanMan)
Re: Beginner of BIG Game Hunting For elk one of the best ways to get one is to go where other people don't. Start building your lung and leg power, make it a year round habit. Running, mtn bikeing or just lots of hiking. Bean
