Guest ranger
What is the best way to clean and care for deer head mounts? I know they collect a lot of dust and dirt just hanging on a wall. Just looking for the best way to keep them looking good.
Guest Scraper
Re: cleaning mounts use a feather duster and swipe with the hair direction. When mounts are really bad and discolored, your taxidermist can revitalize them. This makes me laugh when I think about it, but my grandfather shot a huge buck in the late 70's I never really paid much attention to it until after his death a few years ago, I always knew it was a big buck, but I wansnt really into mounts at the time, I have always hunted since childhood, but mounts and antlers were never a thought to me because I could not sit still enough to ever see a buck, let alone shoot one. anyways, my uncle said that my grandfather took the mount outside one day and sprayed it down with a water hose and let it dry in the sun...lol.....I can see now why the hair is the way it is. My cousin took the mount with him to Arkansas shortly after my grandfathers death. I am going to have him take it to a local taxidermist and have a replica made so i can get it mounted. My father and uncle said they were all out hunting one morning and after they got out of the truck and got a game plan, my grandfaterh spotted a buck down the road near a gate, they said he thought it was a buck and he shot. They walked up there and here laid this huge 14 pointer. I would love to have this deer scored. I will try to get pics posted someday. huntinsonovagun
Re: cleaning mounts I cleaned mine with a DAMP (and when I say damp, I mean wet it down and then squeeze as much water out of it as you can) cloth. I just wiped everything down. A little water can't hurt it.....too much definatly can!! Just like you wouldn't go duck hunting in leather Docker shoes. [/ QUOTE ] You can use those original antlers. No need to spend the $$$ to re-do it.
snapper
Re: cleaning mounts I read somewhere to use deodorized mineral spirits on a rag...wipe the hair down...going in the same direction. Also, heard...using a Q-tip and WD40 on the eyes to make 'em look wet.
