ok so last year we had a heated discussion on who was to blame for the hunters requesting dmps in units that had chances listed as none........so this year i go to get my license 3 gentleman in front of me.....dmp chances are posted in at least 3 spots that are easy to read.....and all 3 ask for dmps in areas that say none(2nd choice)...the lady told them and let them pick another.....but imo she didnt have to......come on now......there is know way that the dec is to blame for the stupidity of some hunters....and if they cant take 2 min to research this .....what else do they do half a@#ed

ok im done thanks....

Re: new york dmps

I agree with you. More than likely these guys are just applying for DMP's in areas that they will never travel to, so they can fill them in their own backyards. DMP issuance has dropped off considerably this year. The area that I hunt mostly is now issuing none. Too many slob hunters now-a-days if you ask me. Easier to just shoot a doe or button out the back door 5 minutes before dark and tag it with a 9P.... mad.gif

Re: new york dmps

No, what hunters do is, if they can not get a dmp for their area. They will apply for an area that is easy to get a tag and then shoot a doe in any area they want. Happens all of the time. Some hunters don't give a crap. And our DEC sucks too!!!! They're a bunch of ignorant know it alls!!!!!

Re: new york dmps

I apply where I have permission and the ability to hunt.

Last year I did apply here where I live...Again...knowing that I would not get a DMP.

This year I have a fairly good chance, though not gauranteed, to get one because I now have a prefference point.

I consider what I did "taking a hit" last year so I could benefit this year.

You can call it half a@#ed if you want...but I wont apply where I wont be hunting smirk.gif

you got me wrong GW.....i dont think what u do is half assed......but those hunters that cant take 2 seconds to read the chances for dmps are the ones that cant follow other rules..ie...dont care if they trespass..etc....

Re: new york dmps

RangerClay: Unit 7M has to many Does so we need to thin them out a bit. Hopefully, we will have 3 or 4 this year. I normally get mine in 6S for late season hunting on State Land, but this year its 7M if I can get them.

Re: new york dmps

Yeah...I've seen those people too.

You can almost read their minds when they are getting their license:

"I gonna shoot anything, anywhere, and claim it on this DMP"

Those are probably the same people who walk out of the woods each year with stands that are not theirs too mad.gif

Hey...Did these people not get the phamplet/information booklet, the one that shows any rule changes from last year(and a detailed state wide breakdown on DMP issuance), that was sent out by the DEC if they had a license here last year?

(Not that they care) smirk.gif

The system has some flaws. To heck with those guys not prepared at the counter. I can't stand them either.

Back to the flaws. What you see as a flaw, someone else may see as a great thing to do.

For example, applying where you have no chance to get a DMP. Preference point- oh yeah. Nor applying where you can't get a second permit is just moronic. But possible someone can enlighten me here as to the reason why. then I will feel like the moron.

Applying where you are going to hunt for a DMP the next year and purposely not filling the tag or even hunting in that area at all. I know several guys who do this just to keep the doe pop up. This allows their non-resident children a better chance at a doe when they come to hunt. This idea increases or allows for another doe to walk until next year producing more offspring in areas where the DEC has mis-managed the herd.

Like it or not, every system can me manipulated to fit your needs and legally. Fair? Maybe, maybe not but this is our system and it's more liberal than many out there. I'd rather have it this way then like my home state of PA and that is an entirely different can of worms that can't be provolked to discuss. It's also due to a legal contract that I have.

I do have a question about preference points. Hopefully someone can answer for me. Do you get two points if you get rejected in two areas or just one per year? thanks

Nope! Just one point and that can add up. The lady across the street from me had 3 pref. points coming into this season. I believe that is the most you can accumulate.

Re: new york dmps

I apply for my area every year and only get it about every 4 years but also apply for an area just below me so I don't have far to go. I agree that it's ignorance in the way some apply, and I can't believe people think that a person in eastern NY goes all the way to Buffalo for a doe. maybe some do. GW- I know what area you hunt and I had 2 points this year and still no dmp for our area, last time I got it I had 2 points but I now 3 this time.

Re: new york dmps

I hunt in 3H & 3R.

In order to get a DMP for 3H, you have to have a preference point or be a landowner with 50 or more acres. My dad applied for 3H first to get the preference point so he will be guaranteed a DMP there next year. His second choice was 3R, of course he got that one.

I put in for 3R on both, I got both of them. I was going to do the samething my dad did, but then elected to get the two 3R's instead.

Alot of people up there in 3H, 3J & 3K apply for 3M ( Orange County ), where there are high chances of getting a DMP and use it in WMU's where it's hard to get a DMP.. Last year our local ECON confiscated two does from guys who shot the deer in 3H and tagged them with 3M tags. It began as just your usual " let me see your license " kind of check, but then when they discovered the two freshly killed does with 3M tags on it, they knew something was up. Orange County is a good distance away from that town and the deer would most definitely be cool by the time it got to where it was discovered.

And yes, I agree there are hunters out there that just don't give two hoots about the deer herd. But, can we even call them hunters?
