Re: Any Birds ???????

Born2Hunt, I'm not sure where you are in Northern NY but I live in Oneida county and I'm with you. Good spring hatch, I'm seeing birds everywhere and fall season is coming fast,"yipee". Good luck on Oct.1st, I know I'll be out there.

Re: Any Birds ???????

Got one pretty good one that comes through the backyard just about every day, has gotten his pic made at our cameras on several occasions. Just posted a pic of him in another thread in here. Too bad there is no fall season in this county.

Always seem to see more turkeys here in the summer and fall than we see in the spring.

Good morning...came home from work this morning, as I was about to my drive...two hens and a young one came out on the road. Slowed down and 5 more little ones came acrossed. Stopped and put the windows down and could here Kee Keeing and yelping on both sides of the road. Neat to hear and put a smile on my face!

Marc & rds, I've been seeing birds everywhere since the farmers finally got the hay cut, but don't you think the poults look small for this time of year? As I recall, the young are usually about the same size as adult hens by bow season, but this year they are much smaller.

I've saw some articles from local wildlife biologists worried that the wet spring would cause a loss of this year's young. It doesn't look like we "lost" this year's young, but maybe there were some lost clutches, and the hens renested later?? Or is my memory really beginning to fail and the young are the "normal" size this year?

Re: Any Birds ???????

luckyman, you're right. I think the poults are definitely alot smaller this year than in previous years. Last year's hatch was really good because we had a fairly dry spring. It wasn't too wet nor too dry. This year (2006) was pretty bad. Those heavy rains totally washed out the nests that were already made in early May. I still managed to tag out this past spring, I shot a jake ( definitely last year's hatch ) on opening day. Then I shot a tom on 5/14.

I saw only four hens this year with a group of about 30 poults between the four of them. They were all chicken sized though. Definitely small. They must have been a late nested batch.

I'm certain TN has a fall turkey season... I'm planning to hunt near Nashville in late October...

Yep, they sure do, but not in this county. If they ever have enough birds killed in the spring the twra told me they would consider some fall quota hunts.

North and north west of Nashville around Montgomery county there are a lot of birds.

Have you hunted around there? My parents live just south of Nashville and I've hunted Cheatham / Yanahli / AEDC... We should line something up to hunt together for the spring season down there in TN - AEDC near Manchester is super good... I'd be more than willing to drive a bit westward if you know of some good places in West TN. I live for a good turkey hunt (is there any other kind of turkey hunt?).
