rifleman25
I have a young hunter that can't get away to hunt any other dates than the muzzleloader season. I am wanting to work up a light recoil load for my 50 cal traditions rifle for him? I'm wondering if 50 gr of powder is too little even for a 40-60 yard shot? I'm open for suggestions
Gator
Re: Help with light load? What load do you usually shoot in your Traditions? I shoot 90gr, and it doesn't seem to have hardly any recoil at all.
wtnhunt
Re: Help with light load? My oldest daughter was shooting my black diamond with a 85 grain pyrodex load with a 240 grain xtp mag at about age 7. She is pretty small too. Gator
Re: Help with light load? I think I would have to play around with load in the 70-80gr range and see how that feels, 50gr sounds to light, is there anyway to chrono the speed of a 50gr load? hunterfisherman
Re: Help with light load? I think 50gr is to light as well. I would try 80. I was shooting 80 when I was 9. Maybe get her a pad to help to. Try going down in sabot size too.
too_pointer
Re: Help with light load? 80 grains would be the lightest I would ever use. She might have to wait a year or two if she can't handle that recoil. too_
Guest gt2003
Re: Help with light load? I reduced my ML load to 80 grains 777 and a 220 grain dead center bullet. Not much kick and the bullets have performed flawlessly for me. Thanks, Greg
johnf
Re: Help with light load? I shoot 80gr and load 240gr bullet. Maybe you could let your kid practice with 50 then take the gun out on your own sight it in with 80 and take that to hunt. I've never felt recoil when hunting. I bet your kid wouldn't either. Guest Bushpilot
Re: Help with light load? I've never felt recoil when hunting. I bet your kid wouldn't either. [/ QUOTE ] Funny you mention that... When sighting in...I feel every shot after the first few...and wear hearing protection because it is LOUD. But when hunting...I don't feel the recoil and the sound of the shot is almost non existant! Ha Ha Ha (of course I realize there is a bit more padding with layers of hunting gear on)
Guest gt2003
Re: Help with light load? Rifleman25, Have you had the chance to work on a load yet? Let us know what you come up with. Thanks, Greg
wtnhunt
Re: Help with light load? 80-85 would be the minimum I would attempt to use. Would like to hear what AJ has to say on trying a 50 grain charge. Just dont know that 50 grains would be enough powder to get a good enough bullet velocity for fair penetration and expansion on deer.
