JimT
I shoot an inline.... If the deer hunting was better here I would shoot a flint or percussion for sure...

AJ
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? Mine is a true muzzleloader, the Savage 10 ML II. It loads from the muzzle just like they did 200 years ago. The stuff you put in is a little different, but its basically the same. I do have a pair of Hawken rifles. One is percussion and the other is a flint lock. I have no desire to hunt with them though.
magnatecsteve
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? I shot my very first deer when I was 13 years old...with a flintlock. It was a cheap CVA Kentucky rifle. Then me and dad really got into primitive trekking. My dad started building flintlocks and I have his very first one he built, a Lancaster (Davis school) 50 cal rifle. I have only shot one deer with a modern gun in the 16 years I've been hunting. For a while all I wanted to do was bowhunt, but then Dad gave me another flintlock he built, a Pennsylvania "smooth rifle". It's a smoothbore with rifle sights. If it didn't have a rear sight it would be considered a fowler. It's a 54 cal/28 gauge. I can hunt any big game, squirrel, turkey.... It has a beautiful curly maple stock with sliding wooden patchbox and an octagon to round barrel. So far it has been very lucky since I've taken my best two bucks ever with it in the last two years!! Jeramie
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? I shoot an inline. I use to shoot an old bobcat but switched and NEVER looked back. I never will either. Yeah its a little easier to have a scoped in line but im a lot more confident with it and its another opportunity to harvest an animal. Trust me, after this year I can use all the help I can get!
BuckNrut
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? I'm somewhere in between. I use an inline, but got my first deer with it this year (first time out) with a patched round ball. .54 80gr of FF & #11 cap
Nut
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? I hunt with a sidelock only.(percussion cap) I also only use open sights. I am a hunter and I like to get as close to the game as the people did in the past while hunting with a muzzleloader. It works out best for me that way.Eventually I will go to a flintlock using round balls someday to really have some fun. My son's use in lines and are going to put a scope on their rig. No problem from me since I am the one who is helping them.. It works for them. I always say it is what works for some doesnt work for others. Some are lazy and some aren't. Swamphunter
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? I hunt with both but usually the inline. So much more reliable when discharging.
magnatecsteve
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? Yeah everything handmade. Knife by Tim Ridge(Swamp Fox Forge) but I made the rawhide lined sheath, Belt axe by Randy Wolfe(Bethel Forge) with holsler by Craig Fisher, Bag by Frank Carbone, Guns by Mike Branson, my dad and owner of Trailhead Trade Co. AJ
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? Heh, thats a good one. I see no difference in my using smokeless vs "traditional" type hunters using Tripple 7 or Pyrodex. The only difference is less smoke and stink, and it does not fowl as much. Hmmm, isin't that similar to T7? I have nothing against traditionalists or hunters/shooters that use old style equipment, as long as they don't try to ram their views [as being the only correct way] down others throats. Guest RandyWakeman
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? [ QUOTE ] The only difference is less smoke and stink, Are you saying the ML-10 produces some muzzle smoke when fired in a fouled bore with smokeless powder? [/ QUOTE ] Of course, all rifles produce some. Just dramatically less. The 10ML-II uses moderate burn rate high bulk density powders, that automatically produce more smoke than their faster burning (shotshell genre) counterparts. ZooBear
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? I shoot both. Im starting to use my traditonals more than my in-lines. I agree with AJ though, to each his own.
AJ
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? [ QUOTE ] Centerfire smoke is hardly noticeable. Using an imaginary smoke scale where.... Blackpowder is 100% exhaust 777 is 70% Smokeless Centerfire is 5% What imaginary percentage would you give ML-10 smokeless powder coming out the muzzle?? [/ QUOTE ] It depends on what powder you are using. I can shoot Unique in my 45 ACP and it smokes a lot, not quite what that nasty BP stuff does, but its noticably more than some cleaner burnign powders. In the Savage, there is a smoke cloud that exits the muzzle on the shot. Granted its not as bad as the BP, Pyrodex, or T7, but it is still there. I would rate it 10-15% or so on your scale. This depends on what powders you are shooting at the time. Some burn cleaner than others.

Blackpowder is 100% exhaust 777 is 70% Smokeless Centerfire is 5% [/ QUOTE ] Actually: Blackpowder is pre-'70's coal fired smoke stack. 777 is a completely "out-of-tune" diesel. Smokeless in the 10ML is, "Hey, I FINALLY got to see my deer fall this year!!"

DannoBoone1
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? I've used both traditional and inline, smokey, and smokeless -- decided to sacrifice nostalgia for efficiency, accuracy, and cleanliness. My Hawkins and Trade Rifle are much better "eye candy" than the Encore or Savage, but that is what they will remain from now on -- eye candy -- on the wall. The efficient killers will be with me out in the woods.

RangerClay
Re: In-Line or Traditional Shooter? Magnatecsteve nice rifles!!!!! I hunt with a T/C Renegade percussion cap rifle. I did modernize it a little w/ fiber optic sights because of bad eyes. I have no reason to own an in-line. I kill a deer almost every year with it. I think PA. hunters have it best. Flint lock only!!! What fun!!!!
