ScottyLuck
At least it wasn't as long overdue as my coyote was. Still, as with the coyote, this was well worth the wait. I took a ton of pics but I couldn't get any to do it any real justice so these are what I got. Vitals were: 6pt dressed at 175lbs aged at 6.5yo (unofficially by taxidermist) This deer and I had a history from last season. I re-posted the story in the next reply. ScottyLuck
Re: Got my \'05 bow buck back The story: We've got a storm rolling in tonight. A Nor 'Easter just off shore is going to bring us some snow. All day the conditions have been perfect: overcast; temps in the lower 30's; dead calm. Needless to say I was frothing at the mouth to get out. I made it home around 3:30pm and decided to throw my stuff on and head out back for the last hour of light. Sitting on stand all I could think about was how perfect the afternoon and was and I kept thinking "This feeling is why I love hunting!" I told myself "if only I saw a deer tonight this would make the most perfect afternoon, even if it was going to be only an hour. About 45 min later movement to my right and behind me caught my eye. I tunrned to see the 8pt that I'd been chasing all season walking 30yds behind me. He headed off into the woods. I grunted at him a few times but he didn't seem interested. It didn't matter! I was happy!! 5 minutes later I turned back to my left in the direction he walked and saw him walking right back to me! He was angling toward me and would pop out at 20yds broadside if he continued on his course, which he did. He stopped behind a tree and I drew. He took a step so that his head and neck were the only things in the clear and he looked right at me. He stared for about 2 seconds and turned away never seeing me (Thank you Predator camo!). I kept thinking, "2 more steps, 2 more steps". Well he took them and I gave him a "Maaa". He stopped and I released. I saw the hit and it looked high near his front shoulder. But the angle I was on I felt good about it. However his reaction said otherwise. He jumped across a small brook and then proceeded to look around, take a few steps and look some more. All the while I'm looking for blood and waiting for him to stagger. Nope. I finally realize he's not gonna fall and nock another arrow. In the meantime he sees me moving and takes a couple of leaps over another brook and keeps on walking. Now I'm sure I missed him!! At this point I proceed to throw a tantrum complete with a string of obscenities, seat cushion and saftey rope all going flying through the air!! It looked like a yard sale under my stand!! I climbed down and immediately went to check my arrow before I gathered my stuff. Ahhh, blood! I didn't miss!! At this point I cleaned up the yard sale and went to call my brother to help track him. We had good blood for the first 150yds and then we found a bed. An empty bed! Uh oh!! After that the blood was almost non-existant. If it wasn't for the snow on the ground tracking would've been impossible. We ended up finding 3 more beds with blood in them. Now I know what your thinking..."why did we keep looking and not back out until morning?". Keep in mind we have a snowstorm coming in tonight. With snow predicted to start at any time. We really had no choice. After about 400yds I really started to loose hope. Thanks to my brother, John, for keeping my spirits up and staying positive! We then found a spot where he stumbled and fell. Unfortunately now he's getting perilously close to crossing a road to private property. We then found 2 more spots where he hit the ground and figured he had to be close. Sure enough about 20yds in front of us there he was! But he was still alive. When we shined him his ears twitched. I snuck around a few yards to get a better angle on him to get another shot. When I shot the 2nd arrow he staggered to get up and fell back over. Because he was so close to the road I didn't want him to make a mad dash so I stuck him one more time. This time I spined him and it was over. It turns out the 2nd arrow would've done the trick but I wasn't taking any chances. The initial shot was high, indeed. I shot him just under the spine and out through the oppsite shoulder. I'm not sure of the damage because of the other 2 shots but he went at least 1/4 mile wandering through the woods. I'm not proud of the shot at all but we stuck with the tracking and were able to recover him. The surprise was that he was only a 6pt not an 8 like I thought. I know it's the same deer because of how the main beams loop around in front. He has decent mass at his bases and dressed out at 175lbs. He's got a big body. That's my Monday night. It was the roller coaster of emotion that is hunting. The highest of highs follwed by the lowest of lows ending with total fulfillment. WOW!!! Below are a couple of pics. You can see the spine shot. The arrow is sticking straight up as the deer was laying down when I shot. Special thanks to my brother, John, for his support and help!! You're the best!!
