wtnhunt
Re: 25 wssm pros/cons Never used a 25 wssm, or any magnum for that matter. Been hunting with a .270 for a pretty good while, light recoil, easy to find ammo, and the ammo is not outrageously priced.
JimPic
Re: 25 wssm pros/cons Ammo availiability is one concern(I really want the 25wssm also). The few people I've talked to said the factory ammo doesn't do the round justice.Like the 25-06,handloading is where the round really shines.I had a 25-06 and reloaded for that and that gun was awesome!I just like short-actions and this cartridge is pretty interesting. snapper
Re: 25 wssm pros/cons Yep...took two does last year with my Winchester model 70 ulitamate shadow .25 WSSM. Good shooting little gun...almost no recoil, at least compared to my .300. I agree with Jim...the factory rounds that I bought didn't perorm the way I thought they should have...but got two deer none the less. AJ
Re: 25 wssm pros/cons Ballistically, its just a .25-06 but in a short cartridge. The .25-06 has been around for almost 40 years. So, its ability to work on game has been proven for a long while. I don't know about today, but I have read a lot of bad stuff about the ammo. The factory ammo's cases are to hard to allow a good seal. This is due to the very short length. In order to get the case head hard enough to withstand the chamber pressures the case has to be hardened. But the shoulder/neck area needs to be soft enough to allow the cartridge to expand to fill the chamber walls. This minimizes the bolt thrust and puts less wear and tear on the locking lugs. In the WSSM, the cases are not expanding enough to grab the walls. This is why most gunsmiths will not chamber the Encore for the WSSM cartridges. It will tear up the receiver in time. If you buy one will it work for killing deer? Sure, but so will most anything out there.
Guest tyshe17
Re: 25 wssm pros/cons Dittoing AJ here. I have been hunting with a 25-06 for 6 years and a 270 for 2 before that. I love my 25-06 but ammo is a problem. After killing several deer with 100 grain bullets, I hated that I was never getting a pass through. I switched to the winchester ballistic silvertip in 115 grain and have taken 10-12 deer incuding a doe at 342 yards, and this buck through both shoulders at about 80. Awesome round, and awesome bullet IMHO.
rifleman25
Re: 25 wssm pros/cons I would go with the original 25-06 or if you are seeking a faster 25 cal look to the 257 WBY mag. Both rounds have taken many, many deer and antelope for me over the years. The oringinal is great, so if it ain't broke don't fix it. Shaun_300
Re: 25 wssm pros/cons Haven't tried the .25 WSSM yet, I'd love to shoot one sometime. I use a .300 WSM though, the only thing I don't like about the cartridge is the ammo availability and prices. $30/box can get expensive. Used to use .300 Win Mag, and I find the WSM has a LOT less recoil and it seems to be more quiet.
