Guest rds
I hunt exclusively with single shot rifles. I own a Mossberg SSi-One in 308, before that I had a New England in 45/70. I have owned several repeaters but just don't like them. I just wondered how many here hunt with single shots and if you get the same jokes I do? Can't afford a real gun, are you crazy, you need a quick follow up shot, Things like that. And every time I say I didin't shoot because I didn't have a clear shot I here " if you had a repeater you wouldn't have to worry so much",to me that's irresponsible. By the way, I get a deer most years and have never used a second shot. I'm not talking about Muzzleloaders, but cartrige guns.
wtnhunt
Re: Single shot Rifles Personally use a bolt action rifle, and of all the deer I have shot and killed, can only remember one where I took a follow up shot. To each his own, personally I dont care for the single shots, but I have been hunting with a bolt gun for most of the time I have been hunting. All about indiviuals preferences. AJ
Re: Single shot Rifles I have a few single shot guns and they work just fine for hunting. My Handi Rifles, T/C Encore, and many of my varmint rifles are single shots. The majority of my whitetail hunting over the past 7 years was using a muzzleloader of either standard or smokeless design. That's just a single shot. I too think many hunters would benefit from using a single shot for a few years. Many feel they "need" a fast follow up shot. They just need more practice. Make the first shot count and you are much farther ahead. The only place I can see needing a follow up shot is when hunting dangerous game. A cool game with a couple hunters on something like squirrels, or varmints is to only have one gun. The shooter shoots until they miss. When they miss they hand the gun over to the other person. It sucks not shooting so you become better at figuring out which shots you will take, bullet placement, and accuracy.

Guest rds
Re: Single shot Rifles AJ, That sounds fun. I think I'll try to get some of my buddies to play, I got one who took 3or 4 shots at a deer three times now and hit with all but we still never found the deer, talk about bad shooting. Once I could understand, but three? Go back to the range. WTN-I'm not saying every one with a repeater is a bad shot, most of us only shot once, but a lot of the guys I know shoot alot, Half the time I dont feel safe hunting with them and they get mad cause I tell them I prefer to hunt alone, I'm not at war. Soonerfan, A No.1 in 308 and a sharps are my dream rifles, just never could get that much saved. My SSi cost me $450 and that was on layaway for 6months. Congrats on a beautiful rifle. rifleman25
Re: Single shot Rifles I have a 25-06, .308 win, .270 win, and a 7mm rem mag all in Ruger No. 1's. I use a bolt gun on occasion, but these are my go to rifles and have proven to take game. I believe when I started hunting with these guns that it forced me to concentrate more and only take good shots. Sure i have mised and even made a few bad shots on game, but it wasn't the guns fault, it was mine. I am considering buying my nephew a 243 in the Ruger No. 1 for christmas. archerjg
Re: Single shot Rifles I have a single shot slug gun, but all bolt action rifles. If I was to buy a single shot rifle it would be an H&R though same as the slug gun. Archerjg
Shaun_300
Re: Single shot Rifles Nope, the only single shot gun I own is a Remington 812 20ga. I'm thinking about getting one for groundhog hunting! Probably .22-250 if I do get one. I use a lever action for deer hunting (Browning BLR .300 WSM) and sometimes a bolt (Remington 700 BDL .300 Win Mag). I like the confidence of having a quick shot if I need it. Especially when I'm bear hunting, and when I start moose hunting.
johnf
Re: Single shot Rifles The only repeaters I have are a Benelli Nova shotgun and a Marlin 336 30-30 and honestly don't hunt much at all with them. My go to guns are single shots. Nef handi 243 and H&R Ultra 25-06. Both shoot sub moa and I've never needed to take a second shot with either one.
