What works better?

Re: What works better?

I think you are asking which is better, loose or pellets. It depends. I was able to get higher velocity from the pellets, even when using equal weights, but the loose powder is much cheaper. In the field, it is a wash as to which is easier to use as you will probably have speed loaders. At the range, the pellets have an edge on ease of use since they are premeasured. I used pellets for 5 years or so but have gone back to loose powder for the cost savings. I shoot .45 and .50 calibers so I don't have to buy different pellets now.

The advantage to loose powder is the ability to tailor your load to your gun. You can go up or down in 1 grain increments if you have the proper measuring devises. With pellets you are limited to 30 gr or 50 gr pellets. With pellets you can get 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140 or 150 gr charges. But you will have to buy both the 30 gr and 50 gr pellets to get this variety. With loose, you can adjust up or down as small as your measuring device will allow you.

Remember with loose, you measure volume, not actual weight. This means 100 gr of powder will actually weigh less than 100 gr when you weigh it on a reloading scale. I have found that my groups will tighten dramatically with loose when I weigh my charges on a scale. I find the charge I want by volume and then I throw a few of them and weigh each one on a reloading digital scale and take the average. I weigh out my loads and fill my speedloaders.
