Re: Gerber Carnivore tracking light

[ QUOTE ]

I'm looking for some feedback from someone who has used the new Gerber Carnivore tracking light. Looks like it would be a big help but it's new and I haven't heard much about it.

Anyone use it yet and like it?

I seen on another forum, HuntingPA.com, somebody shot a groundhog, and made a mock blood trail. The test was done at night, and wasnt very good results! I would wait before dropping $50!

Re: Gerber Carnivore tracking light

Had asked about this in the equipment room back when it first came out and there was a pretty good discussion. Would be great if it works like they claim, gerber has pretty good knives, wouldnt think they would get into a gimmick product, but you never know. Someone here on the forums e-mailed gerber and dont think they ever got a response.

Cabelas has them in stock again, and think they are either $39 or $49, a bit more than I want to spend for a flashlight that might not work as advertised.

Re: Gerber Carnivore tracking light

I had some questions about the Carnivore tracking light also. I am colored blind and I am always looking for help in tracking. So I emailed Gerber asking for some more info on their product. Here is their reply. I hope it helps.

I wrote them:

"I saw your ad in North American Hunter magazine for the Carnivore Blood Tracking Light. I was wondering if the light only works on fresh wet blood only or would it also work on dried blood, several hours old? I am slightly color blind and have a hard time blood tracking, especially dried blood. This light could be a huge help to me. Have you done any testing with people that are color blind? I look forward to hearing back from you."

Gerber replied:

" Thank you for contacting Gerber Blades. The Carnivore light would of course work best of fresh blood but it will work somewhat effectively on nearly dry blood, and not as well on completely dried blood. The lights are designed to make fresh blood stand out in contrast to its surroundings and of course the more dry the blood, the harder it will be to stand out.

Though there are several types of color-blindness, the Carnivore should work effectively in providing a goodly contrast to the surrounding area for tracking. The Carnivore is not designed to make the blood luminescent as blood does not have that type of property. However, with this light, the contrast is strong enough that you can easily differentiate blood from its surroundings."

Re: Gerber Carnivore tracking light

I am also color blind and have trouble tracking as well. My deer from this past season lost about a gallon of blood in about eighty yards and I had trouble following the trail. My best friend was practically running along the trail and I couldn't even tell why until I asked. His reply was this "Are you kidding....it's so bloody that I am going to have to wash all my camo when we get home!" I wish I could see it the way that he does. Maybe one of these lights would help in the dark, but I would still be up a creek during the day.

Re: Gerber Carnivore tracking light

While I am not completely color blind, my night color vision is terrible. Everything looks brown and grey. I have a really difficult time following blood at night, and if this product does work as it claims, the $49 would be a great deal if just one otherwise unable to follow trail was made visible to me, however I am a bit skeptical until I hear some real results from some hunters who have actually used it.
