mossyhorn
Ok so here is the deal. I have two dogs chasing deer around my hunting land. I asked my sister about them and she said that they are starys that have been around since spring. I think they are the reason I have seen so few deer this year. This morning they messed up my first bow hunt of the season by chasing does right past me all morning. Now I have ethics about me and would not kill someones dogs, but remember they are stray. My quesion is should I try to hunt these dogs down and kill them or should I figure out some other way to get rid of them? And how would I get rid of them? GWSmith
Re: dogs running deer ??? Before you treat your problem with some SSS... Call your Game warden for that area and find out if you stand any chance of losing your license if they happen to dissapear and become fertilizer for an Oak Tree With my luck I would hit one, it would howl, just as a game warden was strolling through the woods You could solve the problem by becoming proficient with a slingshot loaded with rock salt

The dogs definately have to go, it's just a matter of how. Call the game warden and find out what your legal options are.

sskybnd
Re: dogs running deer ??? i agree with sss, in our state you can run deer dogs, we dont and have on a few occasons caught others dogs and tied them at our camp till the owners came looking for them, so we could give them fair warning about them running on our land, than we just return there collars after that, cant stand seeing a deer run past you with his tounge hanging out like a red neck. tie

superguide
Re: dogs running deer ??? There's a power snare that catches them but doesn't kill them-they use them on urban coyotes if u don't want to SSS you could use them. mossyhorn
Re: dogs running deer ??? Well I called the game warden and asked him about the dogs. He said to make sure that they don't belong to anyone. If they have collar to try to catch them and report them to animal control, but if they are in fact stray dogs to and I quote " Take care of your problem and don't tell anyone." So SSS sounds good at this point.
rifleman25
Re: dogs running deer ??? I'd shoot them in a new york minuite I don't care if the owner was right behind them. No tresspassing on my land means just that. I have enough signs up. A couple pounds of hambuger meat with a fair ammount of antifreeze in it will do just as good too. I have a serious feral dog issue around my place and these two options have worked well for me.

Guest kyhunter1
Re: dogs running deer ??? set a coon trap with beef jerky or some kind of resistless meet and after catching them turn them in to the humane society. It works to catch a dog in a coon trap ive done it before!

Doc
Re: dogs running deer ??? It's a real shame that the dogs have to pay for the ignorance and irresposibility of whoever turned them loose in the first place. Those are the jerks that I would like to see pay the price for that situation. Unfortunately, the situation exists and you have to do what you have to do. The one piece of valuable info that the warden told you that is REAL important is, "DON'T TELL ANYONE. I'm not sure how the law is in KY, but here in NY, the laws can make it pretty rough on anyone who kills a dog regardless of the circumstances. Somehow killing a dog has gotten mixed up with animal cruely laws, and they make a pretty big deal out of that (legally and in the newspapers). For your own protection, make sure that you don't even hint about this action to anyone....ANYONE. Also, make sure your first shot is a high percentage shot and anchors the animal right there. As much as these dogs appear homeless, it is always possible that things are not exactly as they appear. It's not a real good thing to have a wounded dog make it back to their home. It could start a real nasty investigation. That's not exactly the kind of attention that you want for this operation. Doc

magnatecsteve
Re: dogs running deer ??? I've been in your situation..both with deer hunting and turkey hunting. Two springs ago, had seven different dogs running through my set-ups buring the season... The afternoon of the last day of season, two dogs made the mistake of running deer right past my set-up site....didn't get my turkey but there are two less dogs I have to deal with. Also had to stop using coon urine on my boots as cover scent...got tired of the coon hounds that had gotten away from their owners striking my trail and treeing me.... Tetro
Re: dogs running deer ??? I haven't had your problem during bow season, have had them during rifle season and it worked to my advantage. I'd try and trap them and turn them in. If it doesn't work, well everyone has pretty much covered that.
wtnhunt
Re: dogs running deer ??? Have had these types problems before, but did on one occasion have stray dogs work into my favor, having a good buck show up within 30 minutes after the dogs came through. Illegal to shoot dogs even if they are strays here in this state. Might be best to follow the wardens advice.
