MrWiggely
Is there anything I can toss out on old logging roads that will grow in mostly shade? Wigs
wtnhunt
Re: Is there anything Planted wintergrazer rye and wheat on my access trails to my winter plot. The stuff has really shot up well.
Guest Danbo
Re: Is there anything do deer eat rye? I also have a site I'd like to plant but it is terribly shaded too.
wtnhunt
Re: Is there anything Yes deer will most definitely eat rye. Rye grain is an annual, and the deer love it here. I planted wintergrazer rye from pennington in these trails I was referring to and they do not get much if any direct sunlight.

Guest luckyman4
Re: Is there anything "Mostly Shade" is a tough situation for any plant to grow in, but Annual Rye is a good choice. The deer will eat it and it grows FAST. Another option that I had good luck with is Buck Forage Oats, they'll grow fast and deer love 'em, but they will die over winter (mine stayed green through the end of late muzzleloader last year, though). If you plan to plant something else next spring, that might be a good quality. You've got about 6 weeks till bow season, so get planting! LETMGROW
Re: Is there anything If you don't expect miracles Rye is probably your best choice. Any plant prefers sunlight but you can get a decent growth if you prepare the seed bed well. A soil test is crucial in forest areas. I would bet you will have to spread a good amount of lime to get the soil anywhere near good for growing.
Guest luckyman4
Re: Is there anything [ QUOTE ] A soil test is crucial in forest areas. [/ QUOTE ] Agreed! At least get a pH test. Your local Cornell Cooperative Extension will probably do one for free or close to it.
