Guest Andrea
How come NASCAR drivers have the steering wheels so close??? I am not a fan of NASCAR....but will watch it occasionally when my father-in-law is watching it. Also..................didn't Tony Stewart have an "accident" in his racing suit not too long ago?? I always wondered what happened if a driver couldn't hold it any longer. And heaven forbid if you got a raging case of diarrhea.

Gator
Re: Don\'t laugh, but....... The steering wheel is close because they have better control for turning. And yes, Stewart did poop himself awhile back......

Seriuosly, they have racing harnesses, once they are strapped in, the chances of them moving that far forward are very slim

[/ QUOTE ] Go down a country road with a sharp curve that is posted at 25 or 30 MPH. Go through it about 40 or 45 in your normal driving position. Then, move much closer and do it again. It is much easier and comfortable being closer to the wheel. No danger, the drivers are literally locked into the seat and don't move at all. And no, no air bags. They'd be going off on the first lap at short tracks.

shotupdeer
Re: Don\'t laugh, but....... Multiple reasons, including the turning thing already pointed out but also, over the course of a 500 mile race, with the steering wheel that close, your arms don't get nearly as tired as if they were stretched out in the gangsta lean position.
