unioncountyslayer
Re: Smoking Don't smoke, but use to hunt with a neighbor that smoked while on stand, while wearing blue jeans and he killed a lot of deer. But no mature bucks were ever stupid enough to show themselves to him. He killed a lot of does and spikes while smoking.
wtnhunt
Re: Smoking I dont smoke, never have and never will. Know people who smoke while they hunt who have really good success. My wifes step father pretty well chain smokes, and he used to kill a lot of really good mature deer.

arrow32
Re: Smoking I think smoking on stand would affect your hunting and what kind of deer you are killing.
AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Smoking The guys that smoke on stand and get big bucks are lucky, plain and simple, a mature buck knows his area and there is no way cigarette smoke is not going to make him snort and run the other way. The ones that kill deer get lucky, the wind must be in their favor and are most of these kills gun? I can't see being able to consistently harvest mature whitetails while being Joe Camel in the trees!! I never have smoked and never will!! Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Smoking It's just another foreign oder that may send a deer running if they get a whiff of it. If you play the wind right, it won't matter. If one gets downwind they'll certainly be able to smell it. Of course when you're 60 years old and barfing up a lung, you might not think it was such a good idea!!!
Guest Redleg
Re: Smoking My dad used to smoke and kill a good buck every year. I think he kept the wind in his favor most of the time though

AJ
Re: Smoking [ QUOTE ] if you smoke you have got to play the wind just like anything eles [/ QUOTE ] You got it! I smoked for 20 years and killed my share of very nice deer and some big mature bucks. If anything, it helped slightly as it shows you the wind. I am snot suggesting people start smoking to become better hunters, but you pay moreattentionto the wind. I don't care if you smoke or not, you can't become scent free. The smoker will be paying more attention to the wind as they are aware of it. I stopped smoking a year and a half ago and I have not noticed that I see more deer now that I have stopped. Climbing the hills are easier but the deer sightings are the same.

snapper
Re: Smoking I think it depends on the hunting pressure. If you hunt an area that isn't pressured (ie...less human scent (smoking)) the deer are not going to like a foriegn smell. However, if you hunt an area where they maybe smell cig smoke almost daily...they sorta get used to that smell. Deer are creatures of habit...if they see/smell something all the time and it doesn't hurt them....they get used to it. Ever hear the story of a guy who used to walk trails every day. He used to wear a cow bell around his ankle and would spread corn as he walked. The deer got used to hearing the cow bell and reconized that sound with food....and were safe! Got to the point where the deer would follow him on his walks.

[/ QUOTE ] That's easy, training. I used to smoke 2 packs of Marlboro reds a day and was still able to run 2 miles in less than 13 minutes. When I hunted elk, I worked out 6 days a week. Lots of cardio training is what it takes to get up and down the mountains. If you smoke or don't smoke it still takes cardio training to climb the high elevations.
