Guest 04bowgirl
So this will be my very first season to bowhunt, and will be hunting whitetail, and most likely axis. Does anyone have some tips on what to and not to do... I have been reading and re-reading everything trying to educate myself. Just wandering if anyone had some tips about mistakes they have made in the past that might help.

Guest lovinbowhuntin247365
Re: First Time Bowhunting Deer.... MAKE SURE YOU CAN SEE ALL THE DEER!!!!!! lol , first time i drew back on a deer, i was in a ground blind, and i was so excited about the deer in front of me that i completely forgot aout the one that was standin right above my head ... she looked down, saw me, and alerted the one in my bait pile to go run!! so that spoiled my first opportunity ... jsut be sure of your surroundings, no sudden movements, shoot straight, and pick the tiniest spot you can see to shoot at
Tom2008
Re: First Time Bowhunting Deer.... Buck Fever can you handle it? Don't think about the size of the deer(Buck or Doe). Just think about your shot placement and make it count. Only shoot at distances that you are comfortable at. If you think a shot is to risky then don't take it. You owe it to the animal to make a clean kill. Practice, practice, and practice even more! The more practicing you do the better you get at making shots. Practice from different angles. Practice from your tree stand or from your ground blind. Practice with broadheads and field points. The more you practice the better you will get and the more comfortable you will feel when the time comes to make the right shot. I hope you connect with a deer this season good luck! rhine16
Re: First Time Bowhunting Deer.... ha bow hunting has easily been the biggest challenge i have ever faced in my life.... but it's the most fun you'll ever have.... it took me six years to kill a deer.... then every day til the last my seventh year.... i have been hunting 7 years and only connected with 2 does.... however i have shot and missed countless times or messed up opportunities or just had something mess them up that i couldn't control.... when season opens i will be working on my eigth year of trying to kill a buck... it's a challenge but you learn from every mistake..... my brother killed a buck on his second bow hunt ever.... he was 11 years old and using a 40 pound bow.... so anybody can get one ha.... but whatever you do don't give up if it doesn't go the way you want it to.... Good luck and have fun

ladydiehard
Re: First Time Bowhunting Deer.... The buck fever is definitely a factor. And so is your form when shooting. The buck fever tends to cause one to forget some things...like form. So take some deep breaths, try to calm yourself, remember what you've been taught and make a good shot. GOOD LUCK TO YOU! I'm still looking for my first bowkill. Had 4 clean misses last fall - over and under.

Guest luckyman4
Re: First Time Bowhunting Deer.... Here's advice from someone that has made all of these mistakes: 1. Practice with all of your hunting gear on, including broadheads if that's what you use. Some broadheads fly different than field points. Depending on how you shoot, you might not be able to feel the string or kisser button if you wear a face mask. Gloves can cause your release to fit differently and torque the string. Bulky coats and jackets can hit a string and throw off an arrow. Too many clothes can make it difficult to draw. Hoods on raincoats can block a peepsite. Caps can hit a string and prevent you from seeing through your site properly if you don't turn them. . . 2. Practice from your tree stand, if possible. Shooting from a tiny platform is much different than shooting from flat ground, you need to be comfortable by the time you get in the woods. Also, you need to know at what angles you can draw your bow without hitting the tree behind you. 3. Practice in different light levels and weather conditions. Deer are remarkably hard to see through a peepsite at dawn and dusk as they move through shadows. . . bring a 3D target into the woods and move it around to shoot at it. You can even try shooting with both eyes open when it is too dark to see through a site. Also practice in high winds, rain, cold, hot. . . whatever you can just so you KNOW how you and your equipment react to those situations. 4. Practice (see a recurring theme here?) with a 3D target at various angles, so you know exactly where to hit a deer that is quartering hard vs. slightly quartering vs. broadside. 5. If possible, mark yardages at your hunting site. I use surveying ribbon the same color as the pin I have for that distance (i.e. my 35 yard pin is pink, I use pink ribbon to mark 35 yards.). If that's not possible, learn to use a rangefinder and practice with it. I also like to put ribbons out where I practice, to get used to using them. 6. Learn to stop a deer by grunting, whistling, or whatever so that you can stop it in your shooting lane. Its usually a good idea to be at full draw when you do this. 7. If possible, clean around your stand to eliminate branches etc. that you can hit with your bow or arrow as you take it off a hook (there's another piece of advice, get something to hang your bow on in the tree). Being camoflagued is important, but does no good if you knock your arrow off before you can draw . Also, clear some shooting lanes so you don't have to squeeze an arrow through the branches. That should be enough to digest for now, lol. In the end it comes down to practicing enough so that when THE MOMENT arrives, you are confident and comfortable enough that everything is automatic. Doing the things everyone has said will help you eliminate many of the surprises that can cause misses. GOOD LUCK!
