Guest Finn
Wouldn't you love to hear this: Good morning, welcome to the United States of America. Press "1" for English Press "2" to disconnect until you learn to speak English

wtnhunt
Re: automated answering machine Honestly I dont have a problem pushing a button to select what language to use an atm or even to have an interaction with an automated service on the phone such as paying a bill or dealing with accounts. Dont want to offend anyone here, but I do however have a problem when there are people in this country who speak another language and refuse to learn the English language and expect for drivers license bureaus and governmental agencies to adapt to their needs because they are not willing to learn the language of this country. BowtechsWife
Re: automated answering machine I would love to have this policy at our school. We have offered to have free English classes for parents and no one shows up. We offer Spanish classes and they are full with Teachers and other parents. Tonight we had to pay to have a spanish translator present at our PTA meeting...no Spanish speaking parents showed up, but yet we had to pay. We can't send anything out regarding the schoool unless we pay to have it translated and approved.
slugshooter
Re: automated answering machine I could care less whether or not an ATM has a button for English, Spanish, or Swahili. There are worse thing in the world to get bent out of shape over than that. I've read all the posts explaining that it was a joke, but for some people it is not and really take it as a personal slant to have an option on an ATM. To those who do have some personal vendetta against those who add the language option on an ATM, just think if you were visiting a foreign country and went to use an ATM, but received no instructions on how to use it and no option for English. You would probably complain that you were in another country and they didn't have an English option.

The expectations have seemed to become that we english speaking people have to make changes or make accomadations for those who might be offended or for those who are here in many cases not even legally who may not understand the language of this country. That is a shame.
ruttinbuc
Re: automated answering machine [ QUOTE ] and we (americans) wonder why we are hated so much [/ QUOTE ] I'd rather be hated in ENGLISH! There is nothing more annoying than having to communicate with people who don't make an effort or attempt to speak it! I thought it was funny as a joke and left it as that. Justify all you want, but we are an English speaking nation.
