David_218
[ QUOTE ] Can you shoot slugs from a FULL choke? I have a Rem 870 Super Mag and I have a full and a mod choke, which would be the better shooting your opinion. Yes I plan and trying out on the range first, just don't want to damadge the gun. [/ QUOTE ] You'll find the best accuracy, when using slugs (foster) in a smooth bore shotgun, open bore or improved cylinder chokes. Add a scope for greater accuracy. Strut_Buster
Re: Slugs & Deer yeah you can shoot through any choke. I would recomend the modified choke tho. Or just go out and buy a IC

AJ
Re: Slugs & Deer [ QUOTE ] Can I then use the Sabot slugs the same as a rifled barrel? [/ QUOTE ] No, it does not stabilize enough with just the choke tube. You need a rifled barrel. The rifled choke tube usually enhances accuracy though. too_pointer
Re: Slugs & Deer I agree with AJ. My 11-87 had a smooth bore barrel with a rifled choke, and even Remington told me not to ever shoot sabots in it ! I was very pleased using some Win. slugs in it. I now have the fully rifled barrel and use Fed. Premium sabots. too_pointer
WNY_Whitetailer
Re: Slugs & Deer I used to have a smooth bore barrel and a rifled choke for my 870. I was shooting 3" Remington Sluggers through it with great success. Pretty accurate combination...The deer didn't know the difference. BTW, I sold that barrel on E-Bay for $150 and bought a Hastings Fully Rifled Cantilever Scope Mount Barrel for $150. Pretty good deal... AJ
Re: Slugs & Deer [ QUOTE ] Wont it bust a barrell on ya AJ? [/ QUOTE ] Nope. I have shot slugs through sylinder bore, improved cylinder, modified, and full chokes with no problems. A full choke probably will not give the best grouping, but it is safe and will not damage the gun.
AJ
Re: Slugs & Deer [ QUOTE ] Then why have i seen numerous .410's 12's 16'a with split barrels when shooting a slug in a full choke barrell?? [/ QUOTE ] Ok, I will play your silly game, why have you seen numerous 410s, 12s, and 16 ga with split barrels from slug shooting with full chokes? Why is it that on Remington's web page in the THE REMINGTON GUIDE TO Shotguns AND Shotshell Ammunition, page 14, 3/4 of the way down the page, it states "WHAT EXPERIENCED HUNTERS SAY... Any smooth bore choke may be used with rifled slug and buckshot. Best results would be with Improved Cylinder."
carbonhunter
Re: Slugs & Deer Aj.....i dont doubt the info you provide at all, but in defence, untill i came here and listened to you i always was under the impression that slugs through a full choke would blow the barrel at the choke area. I have seen a FEW (and i stress that word) guns with blown barrels, i always assumed that was the cause, mainly because that was what was taught during hunter education. I belive your right and since coming here have shot alot of slugs through a 20 guage pump with a full choke, withoput an issue. Thats one of the great things about this site and the information here, with the misguided leadings of some of the gun information its nice to have a place where you can come and find out if its just some guy going off half-cocked. AJ
Re: Slugs & Deer Thanks CH. I try to always post facts not opinions or heresay like some do. The fluted ribs on a foster type (rifled) slug will actually allow compression when going through tight chokes. Granted they typically perform best when shot through an improved cylinder choke, but its safe with lead. The only times I have seen barrels and chokes damaged that had unobstructed bores, is when someone fired a load of steel shot through a full choke. Large pellet steel shot does not compress, and it can ruin a barrel when used improperly.

AJ
Re: Slugs & Deer No problem SWVA Stalker, I get a bit sarcastic occasionally. I agree that a dedicated slug barrel is the best way to go.
slaw
Re: Slugs & Deer a friend of mine shot slugs through his full choke for years, but when he tried to try turkey hunting his pattern looked like he was shooting a scattter gun at it...it's no good for turkey hunting now...only testimony I can give. AJ
Re: Slugs & Deer It really depends on the hunting conditions. If you have shots out to 125 or 150 yards, its no question, the rifled barrel with sabots are better and worth the higher price. If your shots are under 75 yards, the smoothbore and foster type slugs are fine. When someone is investing in a new barrel, they need to remember that a rifled barrel will shoot sabots or rifled slugs. A smoothbore will only shoot rifled slugs. AJ
Re: Slugs & Deer [ QUOTE ] Because if I shot slugs it would ruin the rifling in the barrell. [/ QUOTE ] LOL! If this is the case, you must have a barrel made of material softer than lead. A lead bullet, slug, or whatever you want to call it will not hurt the rifling in a rifled shotgun barrel. The grooves may (probably) will foul quickly with lead fouling and reduce accuracy after 4 or 5 shots, but it will not, by no means "ruin", damage, hurt, offend, or even tick off, the rifling in the barrel. [/ QUOTE ] "tick off" LMBO at AJ!!!!!! Listen... can you hear that??? Thud Thud Thud??? Thats the sound of AJ beating his head off the wall! Your cleaning rod will do more damage to that barrel than your slugs could EVER do.
