Re: best all around caliber?

I guess it depends upon the bears. If you are talking moose and black bears, I'd say any of the 7-Magnums, 30's from .308 through the .300 magnums, the 8-Mag or .338 Mag.

If you're meaning moose and big bears, I'd say nothing smaller than a .300 Win Mag but preferrably a magnum in .33, .35 or .37 caliber. The moose, from what I have heard, are not at all hard to kill with any reasonable caliber and is not the variable. The deciding factor is ........"is the bear likely to bite me back?"

He's from Ontario----so, I would guess black bear & Canadian moose. I would pick a 30/06-----that's what I use for elk & black bears here in Colorado. Ammo is plentiful & always on sale. Plus it has plenty of punch & recoil is tolerable. CB

Re: best all around caliber?

for me there is only one round to shoot. i would not hesitate to use my 308 for any and all north american big game animals

gotta love the 308 it has been my baby for years. i have built myself a 243 for deer and small game but for big deer and up 308 is my baby.

Re: best all around caliber?

I use and love my 30-06 however if you can comfortably handle something bigger I would probably go with a 300 mag. I don't mind shooting the bigger stuff, but my groups suffer. So I stick with my 30-06 just because I am very confident with my acurracy with it! What ever you choose make sure you pick a bullet the is acceptable for the game you are after!!!!
