AJ
Re: best all around caliber? If you are talking about just moose and bears, anything from .30-06 and up will do the job. I would probably lean towards the .338 Win Mag as my do all for big critters.

Strut10
Re: best all around caliber? I guess it depends upon the bears. If you are talking moose and black bears, I'd say any of the 7-Magnums, 30's from .308 through the .300 magnums, the 8-Mag or .338 Mag. If you're meaning moose and big bears, I'd say nothing smaller than a .300 Win Mag but preferrably a magnum in .33, .35 or .37 caliber. The moose, from what I have heard, are not at all hard to kill with any reasonable caliber and is not the variable. The deciding factor is ........"is the bear likely to bite me back?" Guest Colorado Bob
Re: best all around caliber? He's from Ontario----so, I would guess black bear & Canadian moose. I would pick a 30/06-----that's what I use for elk & black bears here in Colorado. Ammo is plentiful & always on sale. Plus it has plenty of punch & recoil is tolerable. FSU_Seminole
Re: best all around caliber? I agree, it depends on what type of bear. A 30.06 will do the job fine for moose & black bears, but if you're talking grizzly & the big alaskan browns the minimum I'd feel comfortable with is a 300 Win mag even though Grizzlies have been taken with an 06. wyohunter
Re: best all around caliber? these animals have been taken with smaller calibers, but i would'nt recommend doing it, 30-06 should be the smallest caliber you should consider...think about it its not just the animals life you have to think about ...lol

drkillemquick
Re: best all around caliber? I use and love my 30-06 however if you can comfortably handle something bigger I would probably go with a 300 mag. I don't mind shooting the bigger stuff, but my groups suffer. So I stick with my 30-06 just because I am very confident with my acurracy with it! What ever you choose make sure you pick a bullet the is acceptable for the game you are after!!!! Swamphunter
Re: best all around caliber? My vote is the .30-06 with 180gr PSPCL's! I don't think there is anything in North America that load won't handle, from whitetail's right on up through bears and moose.
wtnhunt
Re: best all around caliber? Really like my .270, but would go with a .30 either in a .308 or a 30-06 for an all around north american game hunting rifle.
