AJ
Re: Gun for Son Welcome to the forums. Good to have you here. The Handi Rifle is a great little gun that is a super bargain. I have a few custom rifles that sit at home occasionally when I take my Handi Rifle hunting. I have 4 rifle barrels and they all shoot MOA or better at 100 yards. I would not hesitate to use them or recommend them to others. One thing I noticed with them is they are sensitive to forend placement on the front rest for bench shooting. If the shooter is not consistant the groups will not be consistant. I remedied this by installing a rubber gasket between the forend hanger on the barrel and the forend. This dampened the vibrations and rest placement was not as critical. Trigger squeeze is another place that can cause variations in performance. The trigger needs to be squeezed deliberately and a good follow through is needed for consistant performance. The Handi uses a transfer bar and if the trigger is just flicked, it will not transfer the entire energy from the hammer dropping.
robk
Re: Gun for Son i think the single shot will be the best way to go for the son as it will force him to be better at shot placement knowing his shot has to be on the first time, but also make shooting fun for him as well and be sure to let him shoot and you be there to help and make it his day or his time before you decide to shoot as it will take away soem of the things he needs to learn if you just let him shoot after or in between you shooting your guns. make him first and he will learn much quicker and be a better shot rob k
shotupdeer
Re: Gun for Son Rather than a .243, I'd suggest something like a .308 or a .30/30. I think the .243 is a bit on the small side for a young, inexperienced hunter.
Strut_Buster
Re: Gun for Son Shot my first few deer with my 243. Drops deer no problem.
Shaun_300
Re: Gun for Son depending where you hunt, the .243 can be great of horrible, the .24 calibres are too light if you are shooting through any type of brush. they are excellent however for field hunting, i would reccommend the .308 or 7mm-08 if you are hunting where there is the possibility of obstuction with brush. Good Luck
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: Gun for Son I still hunt with my .243 to this day, haven't ever had a deer run more than 10 yards on me, get the .243, it will do great in any situation. Good luck and tellus wich rifle and what caliber you get.
silentgate
Re: Gun for Son The new Remington.260 is a great caliber for the ladies and the kids. I've bought my son one for Christmas.
Washi
Re: Gun for Son [ QUOTE ] Thanks for the comments, this helps, though I have also looked at the Rossi youth combos. I shoot a 35 marlin myself and think the 30-30 & 308 may be a little strong for my son. He is skin and bones. I think the 243 with proper training will be fine and will add to his enjoyment. again thanks and this is a great site. [/ QUOTE ] You really think the .243 has less recoil than a .30-30? I own both and I can't tell the difference between the two in regards to recoil.
johnf
Re: Gun for Son I have a marlin 30-30 and an nef 243 the difference in recoiol is not huge, but it is noticed. The 243 is lighter.
bozz
Re: Gun for Son I got my boy a Rossi matched pair.....410/22....its a very safe starter gun....he really loves the 22 barrel but the 410 kick is a little ruff on him yet....he's 9 now....these guns are really light so we skiped the 20 ga. in fear of beating his shoulder to death.......I would highly recommend putting on a heavy foam recoil pad on that NEF ....if I'm not mistaken its about the same gun as the Rossi..my boy is skin and bones too and that 410 hurts of course this is not much of a deer gun but its a great starter gun he'll shoot the 22 all day and the bullets are so cheap.....that 243/20 will hurt a ton on that light gun. shotupdeer
Re: Gun for Son That seems like a good gun to start a kid off on. For small game, like rabbits and squirrels at least. Not sure about deer, or even doves with a .410. I know you have to at least use a 20 ga for deer here.
