drkillemquick
Just a quick question. A friend of mine has a mossberg 12 guage pump shotgun and he is having problems ejecting shells. The guns is only three years old and probably has less that 50 shells through it.At first I thought it might be dirty or bad extractor Claws(?) but this gun is very clean and basically in new condition. He took it into the local gunsmith and he said that is because he is using federal shells. I have used them for years(barnes expander slugs) and have never had a problem with them. Could this be his only problem or should we still be looking for another problem, and has anybody else had a problem with them?
Strut10
Re: Federal shells Sounds to me like the problem is the gunsmith. Mossberg had (in the past) big problems with the extractors on their shotguns. Maybe they've fixed it.......I don't know. But I have seen prolly 8000 - 10000 rounds of Federal's "Wally-World specials" run through all types of scatterguns this summer and there have been ZERO incidences of malfunction of ANY sort. Try the Yellow Pages. Look under "G".
slugshooter
Re: Federal shells Yeah, if it is an older model with an extractor problem, I would look at that before I thought of the type of shells you are using. I've never had a problem with Federal shells, in fact, those are my shell of choice when bird hunting. The only reason I shot monstly Winchester for Doves last week is because I had them sitting around and wanted to get rid of them.....so I could buy more Federals. drkillemquick
Re: Federal shells Thanks Guys. like I said I've never had any problems with them in my gun(Remington), and what he said sounded kind of odd. The good news is the guy didn't charge my friend anything to look at his gun, that bad news is he will probably still have the same problem. This so frustrating especially with goose season on right now. Thanks for the info, I might try to get another gun he can borrow for the weekend. Thanks!!!!!! too_pointer
Re: Federal shells Has your friend had the chance to run some different brands, other than Feds , through his gun yet ? I really doubt, like the others, it will make a difference. too_
AJ
Re: Federal shells It very well could be because of the ammo. If he was using the el cheap'o Federal from Wallyworld, it may be true. If he was using better quality Federal ammo, I would say its a gun problem. Guest cowpoke
Re: Federal shells Check and see if the chamber is smooth or rough. A rough chamber can make empty shell extraction difficult. And depending on the type of metal the base is made of, some shells may have more problems than others in a rough chamber. I have also heard and observed that some shotguns have had problems with the extractor getting a good enough "bite" onto the rim of some of the less expensive shells due to the metal being super soft, or being poorly shaped. LifeNRA
Re: Federal shells [ QUOTE ] Sounds to me like the problem is the gunsmith. [/ QUOTE ] I have used many, many, many rounds of Federals in my shotguns and never had any problems! Even in the pumper, which both were Mossbergs. My father told me one day I was not racking the slide back and forth hard enough. That fixed the problem for me! LOL! But the older 500 series that I had, I did replace the extractor one time. Even took the 835 Ulti-Mag out for doves one year. Never had a problem with Federal low brass. My Browning semi loves them low brass Federal that wally world sells! Guest Mathews4
Re: Federal shells i have a mossberg 835 pump....the only time i run into that problem is when im shooting 3 1/2" shells....the shells after bein shot are longer than the ejector port...so you really have to work the slide hard to make sure it throws out the shell. [/ QUOTE ] Hey guys, this is what it seems to be. We went shooting today on the range to see how it worked and using winchesters it worked fine. He was using the el cheapo federal from wally world, and sure enough we put them back in and the extractor wouldn't catch on the rim to pull it back out. It's funny though because I put some of his shells in my remington and didn't have a problem with them?

DU_man_84
Re: Federal shells i believe not being able to eject federals cause federal is the only shell i can shoot of my 870, ive shot federals twice out of my 870, 3inchers and 3.5's the federal ultra shoks and both times they gave me problems, but winchester, remington and kent have never given me problems only federals
