dogdoc
Re: chigers too late now--but a good dose of deep woods off prevents those nasty little bugs. I've had best luck with using a topical cortisone cream or calamine lotion. good luck--i hate those pesky little things todd
hunterfisherman
Re: chigers You need to smoother them. I use clear nail polish and put it on once a day. This will cut the time down in half. Just got rid of some a couple of weeks ago. hate the chigers

M00N
Re: chigers Yeah use something to smother them. Nail Polish, Kids Glue (not superglue), Vaseline, etc. Otherwise healing takes twice as long and twice as irritating/painful.
Bowhntr
Re: chigers Too late now. Once you got 'em you're kind of stuck with them. A chigger doesn't actually bury under the skin, he bites, feeds, and leaves. What itches so bad is how he feeds. Chiggers do not have a "beak" like a mosquito. Instead, when he bites he injects saliva into the skin that forms a "feeding tube" in the skin. The chigger then feeds and leaves, leaving us to deal with his tube. The idea of "smothering" the chigger is a myth. However, the chemicals in finger nail polish seem to counter act the enzymes in the saliva and lessen the itching. Also, if you think you have been in an area where you could have gotten chiggers. A lukewarm bath with a cup of Clorox bleach seems to help reduce the severity of the itch. However, you need to take the bath as soon as you get back in from the woods. This information is straight from a doctor. I got them so bad one time I had to go see the doc and he tols me what I just shared with ya'll.

Leo
Re: chigers I've had them plenty of times. Nothing but nothing works better than wiping the areas down with a slightly diluted mixture of Clorox bleach and water. Just let the areas dry before you put any clothes on

wtnhunt
Re: chigers Have had them pretty bad here a few times, what really stinks is having chigger bites coupled with a sunburn. During the summer when they are at their worst, I usually get in the pool pretty quickly after doing any type of work where I get bites. Seems to help.
