Well im sick as a dog right now. Last night at 7:30 I was hunting a suburban spot and 3 bucks steped out. One was a 9 point in the 120s. So i decided i was gonna take him. The shot was only 2 yards. I never found him. I looked until 3:30 this mourning and then got back up at 8 and looked until 30 minutes ago. FOund plenty of blood for about 100 yards than it just stoped. So im pretty sick right now. He would have been my first buck with a bow.

Re: IM SICK!!!!

If it is a populated area someone else may have picked him up also. If not here is still there. My first one crawled up under a brush pile somehow and that is where he was found 3 days later.

Re: IM SICK!!!!

i'll assume you were in a tree stand? Two yard shot is a tough angle from a tree stand. Did you visualize your arrow well after the shot?

It would be hard to get a double lunger unless you were on the ground. A one lung shot deer can go a long ways. It is also very possible that with that angle you sliced the deer down the side never entering the chest cavity. A deer sliced like that would leave a really nice blood trail for couple hundred yards but would clot pretty quickly.

A straight down shot that only got one lung would not leave you much of a blood train unless your arrow penetrated thru the bottom of the chest (sternum) area.

Sounds like you tried your best and sorry for your loss. The hardest part is not knowing if the deer is alive or dead.

Re: IM SICK!!!!

Well the buck ran off and then turned to the right a little and I saw the exit hole were the white meets the brown. So I no I hit one lung but i think thats it. I was hunting a thick clear cut and I got so tore up with briars looking for him. I just never wanted to give up. But I did every thing I possobly could. My dad is going to go back in a week when there is a constant wind and try and sniff him out. I hateed for him to go to waste. BUt I still want the rack cause im only 15 and he was my first buck with a BOw.

Re: IM SICK!!!!

I know how you feel. My very first season hunting, with shotgun, had a shot at a beautiful buck. Shot, found some bone, leg shot, didn't find him until a week later, rack cut off. It was sickening for sure, and I even cried, and to this day, I still think about it, but we can't learn anything if we were always successful.

Re: IM SICK!!!!

Dont give up. Sometimes you can be so close and they can be hidden so well you just overlook them.

Had one I killed with the rifle on the opener here once about 5 years ago with a good solid hit with a 130 grain winchester power point from the .270 on a 45 yard shot. That deer, a pretty nice 8 pointer for this area, vanished near our property lines where the river is really shallow, blood and sign just stopped. Could not find any sign the deer went up the bank of the river, looked in the river, deer just disapperared. Pretty sure after thinking more and more about it that a hunter on the neighboring property got it. Is a sick feeling wondering for sure.
